We were visiting our neighbor and she mentioned that our new neighbors come over and asked her if it was okay if they shot cats.
I SO want to go knock on their door and be like "hi, I own 4 cats and 1 dog. Do you mind if I shoot your dog?"
They let their pittbull roam free. (we ALL had issues with them having a pittbull, but she really is sweet. But other people don't know that. I'd be terrified if a random pittbull ran up to me like she does) They don't leash her properly and are constantly losing her. She runs up and down the street. A busy street. A street that people cannot see very well on. Their dog shits in our neighbors yard, in our yard, runs down to other people's yards.
And then, when the dog DOES come home, they just yell at the dog. Wonderful, make it feel like crap for coming home! Gee, no wonder it doesn't listen to you.
But shoot cats?! Fucking seriously? That disgusts me.
There are 2 strays that roam around, they don't harm anything. They've never bothered us, they've never bothered our neighbor. In fact, the cats are even fixed because the old neighbor (before these new idiots) caught the cats and had them fixed!!
Now I'm terrified that if one of our indoor cats would get out, that they would shoot them.
To top it off, they were outside shooting multiple shots the other night at like 11pm.
If I see any of the strays injured, I'm taking photos, taking it to the vet, and reporting them for verbally asking if they can shoot cats.
Ugh, I'm sorry. Can you call a rescue or a shelter and tell them where the strays are? Some places will pick them up if you tell them the general area.
That is disgusting! I would put a call in to your vet or the local animal control/SPCA now and just let them know what you heard and about how they treat their own dog so that hopefully they get a file going on these people. If you felt comfortable you could also politely/or not so politely remind these people that shooting any animal, even a feral cat, is animal cruelty and could a punishable criminal offense (not sure about the law in your area, but many places have laws on animal cruelty now).
I hope to hell they were "kidding." I wonder if there is a county or city ordinance against shooting in a populated area? Our area is overpopulated with deer and many parts of our city are reserved open space, but shooting/hunting is prohibited except for with bows and only in certain seasons. Putting aside the fact that the idea is disgusting, a cat would be a pretty small and fast target. It seems likely in an area populated enough to have near neighbors that someone or someone's property would be much more likely to be hit.

Where the fuck do you live??
That is not acceptable. I would not live next door to anyone who had a gun that they shot off at regular times. And I would not be comfortable living next door to someone who had a pitbull that is not on a leash.
Do you have children? Wait, do they have children?
Is there no one you can call now? Like the cops for gunfire at their home at 11 p.m., animal control for a loose dog, and whatever else bylaws and laws they probably break?
The cats can't be caught now because we have no idea where they live. The old neighbor used to feed them way back when but they moved long ago.
I live in the country, there aren't any rules about not shooting guns. (heck, we've been known to do it ourselves late into the evening but NOT at living creatures!!! and I can't prove they were shooting at a live creature) And we can't prove what they are shooting at. Someone shooting at 10 or 11pm is no big deal around here, but now that I know what our neighbor told us about them, it changes the tune.
There is a big raccoon around here who has been sort of terrorizing peoples garbage so, if all else fails, I hope it was the raccoon they were shooting at. (I know, it's no different but people don't keep raccoons as pets.) Though, I doubt it.
Because we weren't the ones to hear them say it and we can't judge whether they were joking or not, our hands are sort of tied.
I guess long ago, a few young boys down the road would do the same thing and our neighbor had two of her cats killed. She let the cops know about it and provided her dead cat for them to see, they didn't do anything. Because "you can't prove they did it". I guess it is one of those "if you didn't see it with your own eyes, we can't take your word for it" kind of deals. I asked our neighbor if we contacted the ASPCA or something, if that would help; she doubts it (and she's got some good connections in this county) because of the aforementioned "you didn't hear it, you can't prove it".
As far as animal control on their dog; I wish. However, a lot of people up here let their dogs run free. 90% of them stay in their yards. We leash our dog because she's a hound and would take off other wise but we usually aren't worried about other dogs not being leashed. I'm more so being pissy over the fact that, they want to kill cats that wander around yet they can let their dog just go play in traffic?
I told our neighbor, that the next time the new neighbors cannot find their dog, I'm going to go find her and take her home. And then I'm going to find her a new family.
I could go on and on about these people. Especially the fact that they don't freaking MOW their lawn and then they let their little kid (I think it may be plural, I think they have two?) play in this grass.
And the partying. Omg. My Husband and I are young too, well, he's 25+, I'm 22. But we do not party, we do not want neighbors who do, and our neighbor and us sort of feel like these new neighbors are more into partying then say, being responsible adults.
I've never actually met the new neighbors.
Our neighbor, thankfully, did tell them "I hope you're aware that no one around here is going to like that. Yes, we DO mind, and in case you didn't know, the neighbor on the other side of us (which would be my Husband and I, the neighbor we like is in between the new neighbors and us) have 4 cats."
I'm not totally sure if anyone knows how to get around the whole "you didn't see it/hear it" thing.
This sounds like living hell to me. Guns, rednecks, animals running wild...
Lol, the guns aren't so bad. Most people around here stop after say 7 or 8pm. Most shoot for sport; as in western shooting or things of that nature. And there are a lot of hunters who sight in their stuff during the respective seasons.
Then, there are those that live two doors down that threaten tiny creatures and shoot at 11pm.
I mean, yes, we are used to people shooting, but it always makes us wonder when someone is shooting past night fall and why. That isn't normal. There is no logical reason to be shooting that late. It's different if it had started earlier and gone into the night, but to randomly pop off a few shots? I'm willing to bet it was at some poor animal.
ETA: I just want to clarify, that we are in an area where the houses are far enough apart and don't back other houses. People are allowed to shoot. I grew up in an area where you didn't take walks on country roads during the fall. To me, guns are no biggie because almost everyone around here has a reason as to why.
Except the new neighbors.
ETA again; we didn't know it was that particular neighbor who was shooting until our neighbor told us. We figured it was someone further on down the hill. If the new neighbors make this a habit, I will call the police.

Just because people normally let their animals run lose and shoot guns at targets doesn't make it legal or safe. I doubt it's legal at night even of normally allowed. I would still call animal control when you see the dog lose. It's going off their property.

It's perfectly legal to shoot guns at targets here.
And no, letting a dog run loose isn't safe. I didn't say it was? ETA: I said people do it. But we don't have any problems with anyone else's dog. Just theirs. I typically don't know when she's out running because I don't see her. My neighbor tells me that "oh their dog was out running around today down past so and so's house" or their dog leaves tell tail signs in our yard. But I probably will take everyone's advice and call someone about her running. For her own safety. I don't want her getting hit.

Yep. My idea of hell. And the idea that you (OP) dont think that there's anything that can be done because it's "normal"?? OMG.
What is western shooting and why is it ok? Surely the idea that some yahoo shooting at NOTHING (or even at something) in the dark means that a stray bullet could very well find it's way somewhere dangerous...like into your yard, your home, etc.

I never said it was safe for them to be shooting at night. If you read above, I said there is no logical reason to be shooting past night fall.
Google Western shooting. It's an actual sport. People do it. At ranges. They also, practice at targets at their homes, if they live in the right places that allow it.
We happen to live in a place that allows people to shoot; as long as they are shooting away from homes and so many yards from all homes. I'm sorry you aren't getting that, it's normal for people to do that here, that it is legal for them to do it. I don't make these rules. ETA: And sometimes it scares me; I don't feel comfortable going outside when people are shooting. But I can't force them to stop when it's day light and it's legal.
Yah, things can go wrong. It's not like the entire hill does it. A guy down the road does it. My Husband has done it once or twice.
Someone else down the hill does it during the fall.
And the new neighbors, who do it at night. Once that we heard. Didn't realize it was them. Didn't know they were intending to kill cats until AFTER speaking with our neighbor the next day.
ETA: I'm also not going to get into a guns debate because I already stated if they kept up the after dark shooting; they're getting a police visit. This is about the darn cats!

This is terrifying.
I'm not disagreeing, it sometimes is. I'm just trying to point out that I can't control what others do. Yes, the night stuff, I need to call about if they keep at it. But other people? I cannot control.
I'm not trying to be bitchy but I know it's coming out like that.

I think we live in the same neighborhood. And yes, it's legal to just shoot off guns on your own property. It is not legal to let you dog roam but we're the only ones who don't do it.

I don't think you're trying to be bitchy. I just can't wrap my head around living like that.
