I'm crocheting a baby blanket for a friend. I picked out one yarn - a solid (vs. heather) medium gray, with a strand of silver tinsel. I thought it looked like a modern, masculine, playful neutral. Now that I'm about 1/3 of the way in, I'm debating adding other yarns.
I could do another gray - I liked one that was gray and white (like three gray strands, three white strands), or I could do another neutral or subdued color, like navy, or I could do something vibrant, like yellow. Or I could take your suggestions... And I could always do more than one more yarn.
Mom has not yet picked nursery bedding, and I'm wanting it to be a surprise, so I'm not enlisting her for help deciding.
Opinions welcome. Pips of your favorite handmade blankets encouraged.

I would finish the blanket the way you are doing it. Then, when the mom pick's nursery colors you could quickly add a border to match. I think a lot of colors would work with the gray but I especially like bright/bolder colors.
That's too bad because I like that pink! I do like either option of the borders. Maybe a pale yellow or pale aqua?
Me too! But although she's a very open minded mom, I doubt pink would be the best option for her baby boy. I think by the time I get to the border, she should have more on the registry and I can take a cue from there.

If you wanted to add a second color, I would do a Navy blue. I love gray and navy together. Other ways to add color would be a border or a decal (like a truck or animal or something) to put in one of the corners. Check out this site
I really like gray and navy blue together. Having said that I wouldn't worry about trying to make a baby blanket look "masculine" kwim? You could do a green or yellow or something else too.

I know why most blankets are striped: Michael's only had three skeins of yarn in my dye lot; when I asked about getting more, they said they get a max of three per dye lot for every color at each store. This makes no sense! I'm going to need at least four skeins for the blanket, not counting the trim. I may have to do a very large band to trim it out to size. They said it's almost impossible to track down more from a specific dye lot, and the other skeins in my color were obviously from a different lot and would not have matched.
