I was just gonna ask when too. I posted on a local swap page and got some recs. I also asked a few friends. I chose two that are an easy drive and location. I checked the websites for hours to make sure they weren't just an 8-5 place. Both said I can do a free consult so I plan to do that and basically go off gut feeling. One is male and the other is female. I've always had male Drs so not sure what I'll prefer for the babies. I had planned to do it when I'm close to 30 weeks but wondering if I should go earlier.
One of the places is a chain with multiple locations in town and they have an online portal to do appts and check records. I thought that was a good selling point too.
Recs from my prenatal yoga class and my neighborhood parents' list serve. Proximity was an important consideration for us. I think almost everyone in the yoga class picked the same pedi, haha.
I went for a meet and greet at the end of 2nd tri. I don't know if all offices offer this, but it was an hour slot to talk to one of the pedis, ask questions, etc. I liked her so much that I told H we were all done looking! It was surprisingly easy.

Ours was my H's boss's pedi. We met with him when I was around 36w pregnant and really liked him. Personal recommendations are definitely the way to go. I actually use his boss's OB GYN too.
My midwife recommended him. It was a nice situation, because I told her what was important to me, and she knew enough about his practice to recommend him as a good fit. He couldn't be a better for us.
Eta: we didn't meet him before hand. That isn't as common of a practice where we live as it is on the boards, I don't think. But, I called in the beginning of the 3rd trimester to ask about scheduling, and they said to call to schedule when the baby is born for the first checkup. If I remember correctly, I think it was 3 days old.
I actually put a post asking for recs on my FB a few weeks ago. Lots of parents chimed in and recc'ed one practice in particular. They are affiliated with our preferred hospital, conveniently located, and have very accommodating hours. I called and spoke with the receptionist who offered a ton of info and answered my questions. She invited me to come in and pick up a packet of information and to meet the pedis (I think there are 4 or 5 docs) but I still haven't done that. I don't even know if I will to be honest. All their info is on their website and if so many of my friends trust them for their children, I'm willing to trust in that. Worst case scenario if we don't like the practice after baby is here, we find another one.
my OB has a list they give out. i asked some friends/family who they used. when i found one that was on the list that someone recommended, i called to set up a meet-n-greet appointment.
except i waited until i was 8.5 months pregnant and couldn't get an appointment before my due date. whoops.
so, we just said screw it and signed him up as our pedi anyway. i figured that, like any other doctor, if we didn't mesh i could find a new one.
turns out, he's awesome, and we love him. so, yay!
There's only one practice near our home that comes to the hospital where I'll give birth (the hospital and my OB practice is close to my office and ~30 min from home without traffic) so that was kinda that. I checked if they took our insurance and they do. We can always change later on if we don't like them.
My OB gave me a list of the ones who were in my network and I researched them. I ended up tentatively going with a practice and planned to go to their parent night tea, but ended up being in the hospital that night. We went with them anyway when my daughter was born and figured of we didn't like them it wouldn't be the end of the world to have to switch to a different practice. Luckily we love them and didn't need to switch.

My pedi practice doesn't make hospital visits as a rule because there are so many different hospitals in the city where people deliver. We will just take him to the office a few days after he is born. Hopefully I won't regret this. I am delivering across town, but proximity is important to me in a pedi practice.
We went primarily off the recommendation of friends of ours who have three kids. Also, one of the pedis in the practice is the brother of my OB, who I love.
Our main requirement was that they were strict about all patients being vaxed on schedule. It's worked out well for us, we love the practice.

We had kind of a weird situation ... We knew we were moving as soon as my Dr cleared me to travel. So, for the ped visit in the hospital we just used whoever was on call. For the initial well baby visits with in the first 10 days post birth, we used the family medicine DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) that my DH and I went to.
We asked friends who were living in our new town who they recommended and we went with the group that was most often recommended.
Luckily, this time around, we already have our basic pediatrician and we'll have a pediatric urologist for DD2's kidney issue too. We're meeting him on Aug 13 after we see the MFM Doctor for a secondary Level 2 ultrasound. Definitely good to get this stuff straightened out before the birth!
Our OB have a list of recommended practices. I did some research online and picked one close to our home. I didn't feel the need to go in or meet the ahead of time.
We are using the pediatric group that includes my childhood pediatrician. They are connected to the hospital I am delivering at so one will come meet us after her birth. Plus, a friend with three kids highly recommended one of the doctors in the group. They offered us a meet and greet but I declined - I feel pretty confident in this practice.
