We just got a call from my inlaws. Who live in Cyprus.
A bomb was set off underneath their apartment block. At 3am in the morning, while they were sleeping.
They are ok. Their cars and apartment are not. It's not a big block - only about 8 apartments. In a nice neighborhood.
It was the anniversary of the invasion yesterday. I'm pretty worried my MIL may not mentally/emotionally recover from this.
Holy shit you guys. A BOMB.
I don't like this world anymore
------ Update: There was an explosive device, along with the cars doused with accelerant - unclear if the device exploding set all the cars on fire or if they were set on fire seprately as well.
It still doesn't seem real.
No word yet on suspects or motive behind who would want to do this.
I have no idea what to do. I mean, we can't really do much from here. But damn. Damn. I've talked about how my MIL still isn't over the war of 74 and still mourns what they lost (everything). They sacrficed an incrediable amount to build up their life from scratch again.
I'm seriously worried about my MIL mental health. And she does EVERYTHING for FIL. They are both healthy otherwise, and they are ok, which is the most important thing. It just seems so unfair after what they already went through.
There is finally some news showing up on the local websites...which are reporting that there was an intentional act of cars being doused with some type of accelerant and set on fire - so what my FIL thought was a bomb could have actually been the cars "exploding" and hitting the roof of where they were parked (hard to explain - but they park their cars under the building, but not underground - more like a carport type thing).
All the windows are blown out, the metal shutters on the outside are mangled and the fire did some pretty bad damage to the lower floors. When they saw the smoke they tried to get out onto their balcony from the door in the kitchen, but it was jammed shut.
So it's still unclear if there was a bomb or not, but apparently it's looking like at the very least whatever it was, was intentional.
That's terrifying. I'm so sorry your IL's have been through so much. I hope their able to salvage some of their belongings and move to somewhere where they can feel secure.
So very sorry to hear this. The unrest in that part of the world is very scary. It is sad, but never really part of my daily life, so I don't pay as much attention as I should. Reading about someones relative on a random message board makes it more real. As much as we don't know each other I am very saddened, and hope your inlaws can recover from this. My heart goes out to you and good thoughts go to your family.
