Hi all! I figured I'd make a big post about my kitchen reno, partly for you guys (I got some amazing ideas from you guys!) and partly so I can find the info on my phone easily if I need it while out and about. ;-) Because I'm an uber-geek I made a PowerPoint to keep everything organized, so I'm just going to upload the slides if it lets me. Demo started today!
[Added Before & After pics now that the kitchen is done]

Here are the "before" pics of both the kitchen and dining room, with just a doorway between them (we knocked the wall down for the reno):
And the "After" pics:
Here's a view of the pull-out pantry next to the fridge open:
And of the 6" "bonus" cabinet to the right of the fridge open:
Looks like it will be an amazing kitchen. Love all the choices. Just as an aside, your fridge looks like a similar configuration to ours. If you don't want a counter depth fridge (I know some people don't care for them or the higher price for less space) you could extend the wall out a little bit. That is how our kitchen iset up. The fridge goes to the edge of the wall On one side and comes out slightly further than the counter.
Do you mind if I ask your budget? I see you're spending $3500 at Ikea, but I'm assuming that's a small part. Are you having Ikea do the installation or DIYing?
I am so stealing some (most) of this for my future kitchen reno... the finishes and storage are very much what I'm going for, and this is exactly how I want to put a pass-through/cabinets between the K and DR. Can't wait to see it done!
Wow that is going to look amazing when it is finished. I seriously want a microwave cabinet. I do not like the over the range ones and I cant stand it on the counter.

This will look amazing! Can't wait to see the finished product!
BTW, I love the way you put everything on slides. I have a terrible time picturing most people's renos, but I can tell just what you're going for this way.
I love your real life representation elevations! I'm impressed you can do that in PP. I think it's going to look awesome dr.girlfriend! I love your granite and pendant light selections. I'm hoping to have a similar built in microwave/microwave drawer someday. Removing the portion of the wall to the DR is going to make a huge difference in that space.
Looks awesome! How do you do that bonus cabinet on the side of the fridge with Ikea cabinets? I would love to do that someday!
My contractor is going to cut a 12" deep (24" wide and 80" tall) pantry down to about 6" deep. It'll be turned facing out toward the back of the room, so you'll only see the side from the main part of the room.
Wow! That looks great. I have a picture cut from a magazine as my plan LOL. And the detail drawings from HD of the cabinets
Where did you get the pendants? Are they from Ikea?
The pendants are Quoizel Emery Pendants. They were on Lamps Plus, and then I stalked their open box sale until I got them for almost half price ($99 each instead of $179 each).

Thanks! We already got the counter-depth fridge -- it's amazing, it seems to hold much more than our old fridge! Yours is a good idea, but we really want to save every inch. The kitchen is crazy tiny (9' x 11').

It's gonna look goooood!
I was aiming for $20k, but I have gone appreciably over in almost every area. It always happens this way, once I start researching things I decide nothing less will do (e.g., the touch faucet, the prettiest pendant, the instant hot water heater, the double oven...the list goes on and on!) But, on the other hand, we've delayed quite a bit (hoped to do it last year but decided to wait until our old, blind dog had passed away since she couldn't handle the new layout, and then was going to do it in April with a different contractor but he seemed sketchy so we bailed and started over with a new contractor) so that led us spread out the costs a lot and save up more for it. I've also had a fair amount of luck selling the old appliances and stuff on Craigslist. Here's the damage so far:
We already had the flooring, because it was being discontinued after we installed it in the adjoining room and we knew we would reno the kitchen in the next few years, so we tracked down the last few boxes and bought them. We're keeping the garbage disposal, but that's about it. So, I'm above $2200 so far. The main things not budgeted/paid so far are:
backsplash (there's only 20 square feet of it so hopefully even my caviar tastes won't break us in this area!) outlets (of course I want the fancy pop-out ones now) cabinet hardware crown molding

Everyone tells me it's going to be annoying having it so low, but everyone was also suggesting the over-the-stove micro/hood combo, and that would SUCK for me. I'm only 5 feet tall. Plus I want the kid to be able to use the micro in a few years. Plus when we're microwaving we're usually also using the stove, so we'd be doubly in each others' way. I figure at worst, we'll have a second one up there. :-) I did buy an extra door that would cover the whole cabinet in case I ever change my mind.

Thank you! Is the contractor doing plumbing, electric, etc?
I'm asking because I have a similarly sized kitchen and I would also like to gut and change the layout in a few years, and I'm considering Ikea cabinets. I'd be adding a half bath and doing consistent flooring, though, and possibly a small addition... but I'd be reusing my sink. Totally a similar trade-off, I'm sure.

You can look back to my earlier permit threads for the full story, but yes the contractor is doing plumbing and electric and paying a licensed plumber and electrician $500 each to "supervise." ;-)
That's all your cabinets are costing? We are looking at about $8500 from HD. We haven't ordered yet though. May have to rethink IKEA.
Yeah, the Home Depot *refacing* people were telling me $20k just to reface the existing cabinets! I didn't even bother with them for this. IKEA is definitely good quality cabs for cheap, but you probably pay for it in aggravation. I spent 3 hours there ordering the cabs yesterday, and another 3 hours today correcting the order and getting my credit. Also, keep in mind I have a small number of cabinets: 7 base cabinets and 2 uppers. But, the price I quoted was all the cabinets, toekicks, etc. as well as all the $250 of extra stuff I bought today to get myself over the $3500 limit for the 10% discount -- the drawer organizers, lid holders, an extra door, etc. Useful stuff, but I wouldn't consider it the base cost of the cabinets. And tax/delivery is in there too.
