I noticed when DS (5) was brushing his teeth last night that he has an adult tooth coming up behind his baby teeth. I couldn't believe it, since he's never lost a tooth or even said one was loose.
A quick search said it's fairly normal, but that they may have to remove the baby tooth if it doesn't fall out on it's own.
I had a lot of teeth like this as a kid, and generally the baby teeth would get loose and fall out fairly quickly, allowing the adult tooth to grow in. If the adult teeth grow in a bit crooked, you can always get braces.
My very last baby tooth (an upper canine) refused to get loose, even though the adult tooth was getting pretty big behind it. The dentist had to pull out the baby tooth and all was well. It was simple and healed up quickly, they just gave me a numbing shot for the procedure. FTR, I was 13 at the time, so not a little kid.

Yep. Once the baby tooth was out, the adult tooth started slowly shifting into the space. The dentist gave DS1 an ultimatum: "you get it out, or I do it for you when you come in next." I bribed him with Legos to let his uncle pull it the night before.

DD has one like that right now. Her baby tooth is a little loose, but the adult tooth is more than half way up and its crooked. I have no idea what that baby tooth is hanging onto, but it is still in there fairly good.
DS 1's first adult tooth came in like this. The dentist assured me that it wasn't a problem so long as it happened on the bottom, but on the top apparently it can be a huge PITA to get the adult tooth into place. Anyway, he lost the baby tooth within a few weeks, and the adult tooth has moved to fill the gap.
Almost all of my teeth came in this way, all but one baby tooth had to be pulled by the dentist or an oral surgeon. It was really NBD for me at least, I hope my parents had good dental insurance though.
As a kid, a lot of my teeth did this. My baby teeth didn't fall out on their own and had to get pulled. I also had to get a retainer to push my front teeth back out because they came in pouting to the back.
None of my teeth grew in where they were supposed to. I had to have so many baby teeth pulled. Sorry.
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!
My poor kids better not get my fucked up teeth. I had braces for a really long time, and one of my canines was like floating on the roof of my mouth and I had to have surgery to uncover it and then pull it over slowly with braces. Stupid genes.

My older daughter had a shark tooth on the bottom front. It was growing pretty far back. Her dentist pulled both bottom teeth. DD has a tiny jaw so she needs the space. Her dentist said she'll probably have to pull teeth again and we'll talk about braces when all four front teeth come out.
I had a bunch. 13 of my 20 baby teeth had to be pulled. And then it was years of orthodontics. I hope for your sake and the kids that everything straightens out on its own.
No lie, I was JUST googling this. Ben's adult teeth are almost all the way in behind the lower baby teeth, and they will NOT fall out! Apples and ice pops can help. I'm sure Ben will be thrilled about the ice pops.

GD2 just had one fall out. The adult tooth came in behind one of her lower incisors; the baby tooth hung in for a month or so, pointing toward her lips so it looked really weird but she didn't want me to pull it out. It did fall out finally, the day we left Cali so the poor tooth fairy had to track her down (again. Her sister lost a molar the day we left TO Cali.)
