I'm confused by this story. Is their more information?
Because judging by her demeanor, it sounds to me like she feels like she's upset over her SO's arrest and the hardship it's brought on the family. But then she says she doesn't have any clothes or anything for those babies so they weren't doing well before?
If you want a perfect snapshot of the dysfunction that is poverty in America, you won’t see a more perfect one than in the above video. Angel Adams of Tampa, Florida, has fifteen children by three different fathers. When her “fiancé,” who had already fathered ten of those children got sent to jail, she says things began to fall apart. She and twelve of her children are now living in a single hotel room, without shoes, without food, and without clean clothes.
Adams blames social services for failing to help her. Social service agencies, however, claim that they were trying to help, and paid for rent, utilities, and even furniture. In addition, Adams admits, community members have been helping with food.
“Somebody,” Adams says, “needs to pay for all my children . . . somebody needs to be held accountable, and they need to pay.” And there’s your underclass snapshot: It’s somebody else’s problem.
Having said that, these children are quite clearly in need, and a humane society helps the helpless. What’s appalling is Adams’ belief that she is owed this help. There is no gratitude, only an attitude.
Not everyone who needs help is going to be likable. That doesn't mean they don't need the help.
I don't disagree. In fact, her and her children need help very badly. Unfortunately it was her attitude that caused the backlash.
How can people justify having 15 children and not being able to pay for them? Reason #15612531850456 why free/low cost birth control should be available to anyone who needs it.

A lot of things can change for people after they have kids. While 15 is a lot in our modern society, how many is too many, as long as you can provide for them? A friend of mine has 5 kids and got a lot of backlash for having 5 kids and being in need. Except they didn't know they were going to be in need when she had the kids.

This babies need help. That's always my problem with the paternalistic attitude towards these kinds of situations. Her children desperately need help. They are already at risk of repeating the cycle without intervention so something has to be done to keep those babies fed, no matter how shitty this woman is.

Free birth control would not change this situation considering she said she leaves it up to God whether she has more children.
And my other problem with these situations is that this is presumed to be the norm. I would hazard to guess the other lady with her middle class lifestyle keeping her from affording something she wants is far more average than some lady with 15 damned kids and yet in this very article, this woman is supposed to symbolize all that is wrong with the poor.

I'm not sure how many times we need to tell people that some people have kids because they want to. But I guess it's at least one more damned time lol
So she had 10 kids with one man (which is a lot of damn kids but presumably they were together having them and raising them so...) and he got locked up and that loss of income threw them into this dire situation?
The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness
Does it ever say what he was arrested for? Because that's exactly what she sounds het up about, that he was arrested in the first damned place.

From one of the stories, "but the father of 10 of them, Garry Brown, was sentenced to five years for a cocaine conviction."

This is true.
I guess I was looking at it from my own perspective. I can't imagine wanting 15 kids and I don't understand how people do it. Duggars included.
FWIW, I don't think she deserved to be shamed and I do think she deserved to be helped. It sounded like a lot of local agencies were doing things to help like paying rent and helping for food. As they should! I think it was her attitude that made this such a story. But again, from her perspective I am sure she feels scared and helpless. As I would in that position.
this said she was pregnant with her #16 in 2013 when an older son was arrested. her and a daughter were arrested at the time too for beating the cops that came into her house to arrest the son.
I think I got lost in the timeline. I guess I thought that had happened earlier.

Oh yeah, that totally sounds like a typical poor people experience.
And yet, you know, I just wonder about this woman, about her upbringing, about what she saw in life. Because I feel like she sensed the futility of her existence from even before she brought children into the mix. Does that make sense? Like she knew the deck was stacked against her and she's out to get hers while she can.
I see one huge ass chip on her shoulder and some it is probably justified while the rest is exacerbated by her own actions.

Who is to say she didn't WANT 15 children?
ETA: And it wouldn't surprise me at all if she had some multiples.

True. I said above that from my own perspective I didn't initially think that. I can't even fathom having 15 kids. I can barely handle the 2 that I have.
I seriously doubt she said, when I grow up, I wanna have 15 kids. She probably just gets a decent amount of attention from friends and family while pregnant and wanted to keep that coming.
Can't she just bootstrap it and get a TV deal like the Duggars?
But seriously, puh-lease about her entitled attitude. That is the buzzword of the last several years it seems. Entitlements. Millennials are entitled. Boomers are entitled. Workers that want to get off at their scheduled time are entitled. Corporations are entitled. The 1% is entitled. And while these other groups have been criticized, they at least (usually) have the means to work against that criticism and not have it held against them or at least continue to support themselves. But there are people in power within society that are actively fighting for the demolition of entitlement programs because the poors aren't grateful enough. Because they are taking advantage of the system and stealing their (the government's) money.
I hate that this story is being and has been used to try and justify cutting programs, to point to it and say welfare queen, and this is what is wrong with poverty. I hate that somehow people look at this story and see "entitlements" and imagine she is living a cushy lifestyle.
I don't understand why if you're poor you have to be so goddamn fucking grateful about everything. Every.single.thing. someone does for you, whether it be their job or someone handing you a sack of used dirty toys, you're supposed to bend over and kiss their fucking feet. No. Fuck that.
I mean, yeah I think this particular woman embodies a lot of negative stereotypes and has failed at the whole responsible adult thing. But I don't think her poor choices or her nasty attitude make any broader statement about poverty or anything else. Some people just suck, whether they're this woman or David Von Sprecklesen, Evil Rich Guy TM.
