I took my kids swimming with my cousin and her kids at my town pool. One of the kids finds a DS game cartridge at the bottom of the pool and is so excited, telling people that he just got a fifty dollar game for free.
He puts it in the bag, his mom is un phased. The other adult side eyes that he should return it to the front desk because a child will likely realize he put it in his bathing suit pocket and it fell out.
The child to whomthe game belongs probably saved a long time for this game or got it for a special occasion, this is a very middle class area with many people that struggle financially.
I would have turned it in to lost and found. In the moment as he put it in the bag, I would have said, 'oh! I bet the kid who lost this will be so glad you found it for him! Let's take it to the lost and found" Mom probably would have been all, oh, okay.
I'd make my kid turn it in. Doesn't matter to me how much it cost, how long someone had to save for it. You find lost belongings, you turn them in or return them if you can.
Nothing? Just let my kids know that if they were to find an item that wasn't theirs to give it to the front desk.
Right, I didn't do anything, I meant more of a wwyd if it was your kid that found it. I didn't know if I was the one with the abnormal reaction. It didn't even seem to cross her mind.
Regardless, I may have said something at the time, either to the mom, the facility or both. Just to stick it to that parent - tools breeding...tools, unfortunately.
My cousins kid. I tried to make it seem like it could be my kid or here but I guess I didn't hide my bias well.

Who cares if the game works? The kid who found it thinks it will and he is taking something that doesn't belong to him. This isn't even a hard teachable moment.

From you OP it sounded like she didn't really pay much attention. That's why I suggested that you say something in the moment like, "oh yeah, let's take that to the lost and found" I'm guessing her reaction would have been the same. It sounds like she wasn't really thinking.

Sure I'd turn it in.
I also know there have been times where we're out and I need to get multiple kids home rightthen b/c we're on the verge of meltdown. If my 3 year old is shouting about something, I may be nodding and smiling while tuning him out. Ha. Maybe the mom didn't realize what was going on?

I'm guessing she had a thought similar to wambam's, that it was gargabe so who cares.
1. I would make my kid turn in it to lost and found. 2. No DS games are $50, even pre-order new releases. 3. They don't work if they've been completely submerged. 4. The value assigned to the DS game in a "very middle class" neighborhood is perhaps a bit dramatic.
I have not a clue about DS game prices, I just took his word for it.
The rate of families that do not live comftorable is high here, mixed in with families that do okay. Over half the kids qualify for free and reduced lunches.
I know there have been times when 50 dollars was a big deal for us to be able to pull together a gift for kids and that is not uncommon here. Even if it seems dramatic to you. Perhaps I should have said working class. There's a wide range with more hhi being on the lower end.
Turn it in. That being said, the cartridge would probably no longer work being submerged like that, plus who knows how long it has been down there. Chlorine is pretty abrasive.
If it was at the bottom of the pool, it's probably not going to work anymore, making this question irrelevant.
Disagree. Whether it works or not is not the point, nor is it for the finder to determine. Your kid found something of value that is not his/hers. Said kid, IMO, does not get to pocket the item rather he/she needs to turn it in to L&F.

We'll, to be fair, it is relevant in what you've said because it removes the value. So you haven't found something of value.
Well turn it on, but only because it's a working class neighborhood. If it was the richies ds game then fuck 'em.
Oh jeez this is not what I meant, I only mention it because my cousin lives in a more affluent neighborhood so I thought maybe she didn't think it was such a big deal. Not speaking for everyone.
