We have a list and it says not to label stuff individually, but to put it in a bag with your child's name on it. It's communal of course. But a few of the items on the list are a pencil case, a backpack and a photo of your child. I assume they just mean the child needs his/her own backpack and not that I should just bring any old random one. But what about the pencil case? My son was at Staples with me and wanted all the specialty cases (oh look here's TNMNT!). I just bought a nice generic one assuming it's going into the communal pot. Now I'm wondering if that is their "own" like the backpack and I should have let him get what he wanted.

at DS's school - pencil cases are their own personal and not communal. most everything else is for the class to share. and backpack - yes they need their own.
I would assume the pencil case is personal. Our school gives them pencil bags so everyone has the same in K and 1. Which probably makes the teachers happy...lol.
