I know almost no popular music or artists. I also don't watch a lot of new TV or movies. DH and I just saw Monuments Men this weekend and it's the first new grown-up movie I've seen in I don't know how long. When it comes to TV, I generally DVR reruns of my old favorite shows. I got really excited last week when I saw that one of the random channels is now showing Dr. Quinn.
I know a LOT about Bubble Guppies and My Little Pony, though.
i'm woefully out of touch with recent pop culture (I dont watch Bachelor/bachelorette or any reality show really, it took me a really long time to figure out why Kim Kardashian was famous, and I still havent completely figured it out, and I dont really watch "new" TV besides Park and Rec and HBO. so no Orange is the new black, house of cards, mad men, etc.) But I can pick up a lot of the pop references.
I think bc I had older brothers though a lot of the stuff in this thread are just part of my cultural landscape, so to speak, and its hard for me to understand that not everyone has seen Star Wars a hundred times, or Rambo, or Hot shots, or Top Gun, and so on. I dont watch it religiously but I've seen enough Simpsons episodes to get most of the references and H does love Family Guy so I'm to date on that.
I also grew up listening to CSNY, Rolling Stones, Beatles, and the like, so the classic vinyl/deep tracks/60s on 6 stations on Sirius are like the soundtrack to my childhood.
So i've got the stuff from the 60s, 70s and 80s down. it's the new stuff that I lose track of, LOL.
Oh and I'll admit the big thing I'm missing from the past 10 or 15 years is probably the Wire. I haven't seen it and while I'm sure we'll get around to it eventually, it's really far down on my list.
Oh! I've never watched most classic movies like Gone with the Wind or Casablanca. I hate watching movies unless they are funny. Hence The Naked Gun being my favorite lol.
But I have seen Buffy the movie since Luke Perry was in it.
GWTW is my all time favorite but I can see why some might not want to sit through it.
90s TV. I've watched friends a couple times, same with Seinfeld, but I couldn't quote any of it. I think I saw 1 Buffy episode.
I don't know anything about pop music from the last 10+ years.
I know next to nothing about most sports.
If something happened in the summer in the 80s or 90s I probably don't know about it. That's when I would live with family that had no access to TV or news. I remember the on case only because someone with a bootleg satellite recorded it and passed it around the island.

Brandi's little brother pissed on her in a sex tape and she was besties with Paris Hilton in the wave of attention Paris earned after her own sex tape.
I can't with The Big Lebowski. WHY is that film so famous???
I have no idea what Zac Efron's voice even sounds like. I don't know any Justin Bieber or Selena Gomez songs.
One Direction. True Blood. Girls (the series). Fast and Furious movies. 24 (the series). Teen Mom. The Apprentice. Lana del Rey. Tom Hardy. Morrissey. Smurfs. Nirvana. REM.
Saw one episode of House of Cards and fell asleep.
You know what??? You just go sit over there!
No Tom Hardy??
I don't know who he is or why he's famous. Every time I hear his name I think of Ed Hardy and then Jon Gosselin and then I get the shivers.

I'm really into pop culture, movies, and tv shows, but I have some major gaps.
Never watched Star Trek or Star Wars. Haven't seen any major war movie (couldn't get through Saving Private Ryan) I don't think I've seen Mary Poppins, Wizard of Oz, or many Disney movies. I bet I saw them as a kid and just forgot them, but I'm not sure.
I don't know much about doing hair/makeup or cooking. For example, I first used a lip brush at the age of 37. I didn't even realize there was such a thing as pantylines until a friend told me several years ago. (I was talking with a male friend about underwear, who knows why, and he said that his girlfriend wore a certain type because she was worried about pantylines. News to me.)
Now I know beyond a shadow of a doubt why people say I'm like Sheldon Cooper. I am so flipping weird.

EW NO, NO ED HARDY, NOT EVEN RELATED!
But seriously, Tom Hardy is an amazing actor who is hella fine and even if he weren't hella fine, he'd still be an amazing actor. He's not a big budget movie star though. The closest he's come is playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises but he is talented as fuck and thus, I will watch everything he is in, even when he's playing not so hot dudes in grandpa sweaters.
He was in Band of Brothers and Black Hawk Down because really, who wasn't. He was also in Inception and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy because again, who wasn't? This Means War was a shitty romcom but damn he wears suits the entire time and works his usual British accent. WHO DOESN'T LOVE THAT SHIT even if eclaires prefers Chris Pine.
He's doing Mad Max though so maybe he'll get a bigger career. I kind of hope he doesn't though. He's so good at character roles that I just want him to keep doing that.

Are you allowed to be like Sheldon Cooper without having watched a single Star Trek or Star Wars? I obviously don't know enough about the BBT to answer this question.
I'm not like Sheldon Cooper as far as entertainment. I have never read a comic book or watched Star Trek or Star Wars. But I have other things in common like social awkwardness, dislike of driving, etc. :-)
By the way, CBS is missing a huge opportunity with Big Bang Theory being moved from its Thursday night spot to make way for Thursday night football. Why aren't they running promos with Sheldon saying "you're in my spot, you're in my SPOT?" then a closeup of his couch with a famous football player or coach like Manning, Brady, etc. It could vary by what tv market it is, like Romo in Texas or Sherman in Seattle.

I don't have much to add, except I'm don't know much of anything from the 80s and 90s pop culture. I'm just here to add some gifs.
I don't have my shit together with contemporary pop culture; I used to go to a lot of movies and watch a lot of TV and just don't anymore... but anything from more than about a decade ago, I got that.
For some unknown reason, I started a binge watch of Twin Peaks the other night. I watched it when it was broadcast (my senior year in college) and I remember it being sooooo gripping, so fascinating, so cool. Now, it's just uncomfortable. I don't know if it hasn't aged well or if I've aged past thinking that long pauses are cool... or if there was something about having to wait for episodes.
As much as I love Kevin Spacey (and I do) I haven't been able to get into House of Cards. I watch a couple episodes, then move on to something else, then come back to it... still not done with the first season.
You all NEED to watch The West Wing. You're on a POLITICS discussion board, FFS.

Not really lol. Sheldon Cooper treats Star Wars and Star Trek like the Bible. And Indiana Jones.
MrsBecky, I haven't seen any Indiana Jones, either.
edited to add: it's weird that I don't know who Tom Hardy is because I really know a lot about entertainment, esp the Golden Age.
Never watched Monty Python, The Simpsons, Family Guy7, or King of the Hill. I really like House of Cards, but it takes a lot of time to get through, and if you don't focus you'll miss something. Same with True Detective. I'm finishing Orange is the New Black now. It's ok, nothing special.

House of Cards for me is like...it's slow for several episodes and then there's a big payoff. Then slow again. It's harder to binge-watch than other shows.
I can't believe there are people here who haven't seen The West Wing. I feel like that should be required viewing!
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."
Seriously, though. I don't know what I don't know. I do know I'm old so I know a lot of things, I also know I'm old so a lot of the newer things....yeah I may not know that shit. Like new math. (Or, let's be honest, we all know I don't know any math. wawa, irishbride2, Scout'sHonor)

Can I tell you how heartbroken I was when I got this through Netflix a while back and it was nothing like the glorious show I remember? A small part of me died. The soundtrack is still the shit, though.

What? After momi said that I was planning on going back to watch. Dang. What about China Beach?

Don't know about CB, but all of the cutting edge weirdness of Twin Peaks now just seems like bad direction and lousy acting. As a former David Lynch devotee, it hurts my heart to type this out.
Oh let's talk about things that hold up and things that don't. Because the only thing from the 80s I can watch are Designing Women and Quantum Leap.
What? No Golden Girls? Doogie Howser?
Golden Girls, yes. Doogie Howser, no.
I loved MacGuyver as a child. Could not wait for Monday nights. I tried to watch it in a hospital waiting room and nearly went out of my good mind. That shit is stupid and why can't MacGuyver throw a punch? How was Murdoch always getting him somewhere? The hell?
