now that my bathroom is finished, I'm starting work on my kitchen. as a reminder, I have the wallpaper border all around the top of my kitchen/breakfast area. I stripped that off on Monday. the geniuses who papered this house did 2 things: 1) they papered over beautiful stained wood above my cabinets, the same wood as the cabinets themselves. instead of painting, I plan to remove the glue residue and polish/treat the wood as best I can. 2) they papered over painted wall in the breakfast area. so as I stripped the border, the paint came with it in a few places.
so UGH, I have to fix this before painting. my googling tells me that I should scrape off what I can, patch it, sand, retexture, prime, THEN paint. this will add a minimum of 2 days to this project to allow for drying time. is this accurate, what yall would do? any way to make it easier? not that it's super difficult, I learned how to do this with my bathroom but I really don't wanna.
oh and a pic of some of the peeling paint. this is the worst area, right as I was beginning. I figured out how to minimize, but not completely eliminate, the peeling as I moved on.
while waiting for problem #2 to dry (hot water/vinegar mixture and scrubby sponge to remove the glue), I started tackling problem #1.
I want to cry. the wallpaper glue is not coming off the stained wood above the cabinets with the above method. I'm going to have to sand it, which will definitely entail a new clear coat, possibly new stain. I'm so frustrated. my bathroom reno was tedious, but everything I did worked the first time I did it. now nothing is working.
Maybe another method will work...have you tried dishwashing liquid? Or something oily? Sometimesoilsbea rk down the adhesive well enough to scrub it off and remove the residue with dishwashing liquid.
Don't cut corners on the peeling paint! Yes it sucks that it takes so long, but it sucks even more to regret not doing it right the first time.
I'd also keep trying other solutions on the wood before moving to sanding. How long are you letting it stay wet? Have you tried any of the chemical wallpaper removers? (DIF, I think it's called?)

I'm scared of the chemical solvents like DIF. I really don't want to ruin the stained wood underneath. maybe something oily will work... goo gone or something of that nature?
I didn't catch that. My computer is either just crap or it has a virus, and what I type doesn't have spaces or inserts them in weird places. it also seems like what I type doesn't show up in the order typed...like what is typed with one hand registers before what is typed with other. It is a bizarre pita that is sometimes hilarious...but mostly not to me.
Omg goof off seems to be working, with lots of elbow grease. Thank the Lord. I asked the dudes at Lowe's, and they said goof off. Also got some goo gone just in case.
