It is like no one understands proportion and scale anymore.
I just got a new lamp from Lamps Plus (75% off on some crazy open box super sale), and I love it.
It doesn't look as bad in the photo. Something is different, like they resized the photo and the ratios are off. Irl, it has a bobble head thing going on...the body of the lamp is about 2.5 times . I thought it would look better with a shade maybe an inch or two deeper, but didn't say mention it to DH when I showed him the lamp. I did mention that something looked off to me and he said that he thought it looked unbalanced and that the lampshade would be better if it was 2" deeper.
It is a pretty tall lamp, so if you are seated, (or standing across the room), you can actually see part of the socket. It is so weird.
The other table lamp that we have had in the living room (will be moving to a different room) has the opposite problem....it looks like the lampshade is resting on the lamp and looks squat. I think the lampshade on this lamp is too big in diameter, but the height wouldn't be bad if it was seated a little higher.

I hear you - I cannot find a good lamp/shade match off the shelf. I usually end up at a lighting store mixing and matching to get the look I want, but that's so frustrating.
I spent like two months going insane trying to find a lamp shade that fit some lamps I got on sale. I went to every brick and mortar store and every online store I could find until my eyes were bleeding. I bought and returned about five sets of lampshades before I ended up getting some at home depot, which is where I got the lamps in the first place. They weren't what I was picturing but they work. That was a traumatizing H&G experience.
