I don't have kids, but I'd go with the LLBean junior original pack for pre-school- grade 1; the original book pack for grades 1-6; and the deluxe book pack for grades 7 and above. I used the deluxe book pack for 8 years (through all of high school and college) and it was still in great shape afterward. They are on sale now and well worth it. I don't know about the PBK packs, but I'm a huge fan of LLBean backpacks.

We've never bought one, but the consensus has been no. LL Bean backpacks are on sale right now for $29 with free monogramming and shipping. Those backpacks really will last.
Edit: We used a regular, full size backpack from K on. S had a SwissGear backpack from K-3 and we are replacing with the LL Bean this year since a zipper has finally messed up.

I bought a really cute one for my nephew and the quality was awesome. I got the small on sale for I think $30. I am not sure about durability because I bought it at Christmas and he is four so he mostly uses it to pack is stuffed animals when he comes to stay at my house. LOL
I've heard no, but no personal experience. I have bought their lunchboxes there before and wasn't impressed. That said I did buy dd2 one of the small ones (not the mini) for pre-k, it was on sale for $23. I figure it will get her through pre-k and K and for $23 I am fine with that, it's adorable.
I know this isn't what you asked, but I bought a Patagonia bag for DD from Zappos and it's lasted longer than even the LL Bean lunchbox she has. The thing appears to be indestructable. It's a little more expensive than PBK, though, I think.
My DD used a PBK backpack for kindergarten last year. It looks pretty much the same as the day I bought it. But so does the Avengers one my DS has from Target .
Until they're old enough to be lugging around heavier books I think they're all about equal.
Overall I am never impressed with PBK quality, especially for the price.
I always had a Jansport bookbag. Do they even make those anymore??

DD had a PBK one for kindergarten and it was awesome. No issues and it has held up really well, aside from needing to be cleaned. I was very impressed with it.
I got her the normal size PBK back pack for school this year since the one last year held up so great, she just wanted a bigger kid one looks wise and needed a bigger one size wise.
My DD is only 3 and we use it mainly for daycare/pre-school. We ordered it from PBK and I was happy with it until now. We've had it for about 2 years, and the ends are starting to fray. It's pretty much falling apart. I would not order a back pack from them again, especially with how much we payed for it.
