I'm considering a family trip (2 adults/2 kids) to Lake Tahoe for a few days in October. We've never been so I have no idea if there are more desirable areas to stay. Any suggestions on accommodations or activities?
North is more quiet, South has more nightlife. We stayed at a house in Carnelian Bay and it was really nice, however there wasn't much to do. I tend to gravitate more to the South but that's only when we have people with us (like grandparents) who can watch the kids for an evening.
We went last October and stayed at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino. Our rooms were really nice and we had a great time. We were able to go swimming (heated pool) and use the hot tub. Great scenery. Friendly people. We were a short walk or drive to several restaurants. We drove around the lake, went to the beach (we didn't swim though it was warm enough that a couple thrill seekers were sunning in bathing suits). We were only there for a long weekend.
I usually stay on the North Shore because I have friends there, so I'm not as familiar with South Shore. It should be great weather for hiking. I would definitely check out Emerald Bay. Your kids should be old enough to do the hike down to the shore from the parking lot. If not, it's a great photo op. Your hotel should be able to recommend more hikes nearby.
We just did a weekend in North Shore, at a HomeAway place walking distance to King's Beach (Tahoe City area), and it was so fun! In October, I'd probably want a hotel with a pool/spa as an option, because the water is already cold in the summer, although with the drought it was pretty shallow and relatively warm.
I'd do North Shore, and there's tons of great hiking and stuff in close proximity. Emerald Bay is fantastic, and going to Squaw Valley is fun too. at the latter, you can rent bikes and do a loop around the valley, and also ride the gondola thing to the top. They may even have ice skating at the top going by then, but if not, it's still great scenery.
