Our car policy expires next week and we are shopping for quotes for the new house as well. The car rate I just got online is like, half the rate progressive is quoting me for the exact same coverage on our renewal. I am skeptical. We've been with progressive for 4 years and they were great when I was rear ended, but our rates have consistently gone up every renewal and the excuse is that there are a lot of claims in our area, which seems really dumb to me. Why is that my fault?
anyway, I am skeptical they are not that great or something.

I have not heard good things from insurers or claimants I've dealt with who had them.
The most common complaints I've heard are that they raise your rates after the initial low price quote, and very poor claims handling (slow, difficult to get info from, etc).
I've found that insurance companies suck you in with low rates and then slowly raise them. I switch every 3-4 years and usually save a bunch by switching.

This was absolutely true for us. Nobody would answer their phones or emails. I tried contacting supervisors - they ignored me too. It took months to close the claim. And then they forgot to pay us, so I had to call and harass them about that. When they overpaid us they were SUPER QUICK about resolving that lol.
Ugh that's awful
Of all the people I've talked to- I don't think I've ever had someone rave about them. It's not the worst company I've heard complaints about- but I haven't come across anyone singing their praise, haha.
I was hit by a guy that had esurance. They have been a pleasure to deal with. They've called me several times to follow up and provide new info. I am supposed to get my car back tomorrow. I didn't even need to go to the repair shop - they brought a rental car to my work and switched out my car in my parking lot. We'll see tomorrow for sure, but so far so good. The repairs are warrantied.
When I started the process, I called my insurance first (nationwide) and they were going to make me drive up to the repair shop twice - once for the estimate and then again for the actual repair - and the closest approved shop was 30 minutes away. Luckily they eventually told me that I should cancel my claim with them and work directly with esurance.
I have esurance - it was half the price of GEICO. I have had one claim with them, which was kind of complicated and ended up going under my uninsured motorist coverage. They were easy to deal with and very efficient, and I have recommended them several times since then.
If you get your car totaled, I'd rather have State Farm. Personal experience from working with their parent company. I have the t-shirt, the umbrella and a major dislike for the company.
I have a broker and she checks my rates each year and we switch often. I've never had a car claim ::knock on wood:: but did have a roof claim through Allied and it was a breeze.
But I don't know if brokers can look at the discount places like esurance or geico, so I may not be getting the "best" deal every year?
What the hell are you insuring, a diamond encrusted yacht?
All my other quotes have been under 1k. I have no idea what amica is smoking
They're crazy people.
I sold insurance for too long (reason #34 that I'm slowly losing my insanity), but with the discount companies, you should always ask them what the limits of liability are because they'll sell you the cheapest by default (depending on what state, the limits will vary - Kansas is 25/50k and I carry ours at 100/300k). It's not always necessary but I find insurance to be a "just in case" waste of money anyways so I might as well make sure I'll be plenty covered.
