katespade My MOM and GRANDMA read these books and wanted to discuss at the dinner table. NO THANK YOU! I think that was part of it that made me NOT want to read/finish the books.
Haha I used to do this more often than I should probably admit to. My feet get cold at work in the winter I usually wear my boots in, then change into flats, and don't remove my socks. I never said I was fashionable!
My coworkers recently discussed sterilization of some women- as in they were for it. Some qualifications: giving your 6th kid in a row up for adoption, 7th kid by 25, all 7 kids still on Medicaid, and doing drugs while you're pregnant (and actually having your bf inject shit into your IV).

Annndddd go!
Hmm.. that's an interesting topic. As a joke, I'd say there are plenty of people that shouldn't reproduce. But a real, serious answer is that I think there needs to be better birth control education in schools. And more access, especially at a younger age. I'm all about the prevention! I think this would help the "unwanted" pregnancies. As for people that just have a lot of kids.. not my thing but if that's what you want, who am I to tell you you can't, KWIM? That's kinda my philosophy on a lot of things in life!
My biggest problem with 50SOG is that I don't really want to know about anyone else's porn preferences and these books seem to have opened up a dialog that I want no part of. No, SIL, I do not want to know that you're obsessed with these books, I do not want to know which parts are your favorites, and I absolutely DO NOT want to go and see the movie with you. I don't consider myself a prude and I'm all for whatever floats your boat, but this inappropriate sharing stuff needs to get shut down.
Plus, the whole abusive relationship, he treats her like crap, bad emotional message, terrible writing, etc.
Ugh, my mom is re-reading them and was telling me all about how much she likes them this weekend. "I mean, yeah, the sex is kinky, but it's a really good story!"
Please never say the words 'kinky sex' to me ever again, thanks Mom.

My sister has been a mother figure (friend of dad, not gf) to a little girl for 4 yrs who fits this description. She is the 5th or 6th kid, born on heroin, mom (under 30) has none of the children (doesn't want then, signs her rights away). The father has actually received phone calls for additional children she has had since, seeing if he wants them (keep sibs together even tho they aren't his). It's heart breaking. The little girl is starting kindergarten this year and you can tell she will struggle. It's just sad. Not for nothing, but I can see sterilizing her.
My MIL asked if I wanted to borrow her 50sog. Vomit! No thanks.
I just watched the 50 Shades trailer and I'm intrigued. I didn't read the books, only the small sample that Amazon has for the first book. The trailer looks better than what I read of the book! It still seems to be kind of a bad porno, but I can suspend my disbelief for a while and enjoy it, I think.
My MIL read the book too, but she's really into trashy romances, so that's not too surprising. I actually don't mind a good romance novel myself, but the abuse dynamic in the 50 Shades plot repelled me.
Mine is that I KNOW there is a social stigma with admitting you've read the "50 Shades" trilogy and even more shame admitting you're going to see the movie. I don't care. I don't. I will be in line to see the movie and everyone can suck it. I understand the basic argument was "oh the writing was awful!" I don't care. No one really read it for the literary prose anyway. Everyone shouting at us can sit down and go write THEIR book...(I say all this after watching the trailer released this morning.)
More shame: I read it when it was still "Master of the Universe," a Twilight fanfic. I still have a copy of the original fanfic on my computer. Also, I actually haven't read Fifty Shades. It just wouldn't be the same.

pooh8402 I remember that it started as a Twilight fanfic (even more reason to not like it.. sorry, lol). I guess you might not know if you haven't read 50 Shades, but how is it a fanfic and different? Is Christian supposed to be Edward or something? I was really confused about how it had anything at all to do with Twilight!
MrsAggie are those two different people? I don't know how I feel about the idea of sterilization (it sure can be a tempting idea at times, but I see tons of ethical issues) but I definitely am judging the 6th kid for adoption in a row. Has no one told her about BC yet???
Those situations are dozens of people over the years.
This board is so mild compared ML lol. I would have had "WOMEN'S REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS!!" for pages and pages after this.
Anyways, I've been in a lot of heartbreaking scenarios that are very emotionally taxing. Some people are just assholes but most that are repeat offenders have a mental disorder. All of these people refuse tubals and even IUDs. As much as I say I want the OB's hand to "slip" and cut her tubes, I know realistically I would never support any law that allowed it. Most of these women need better support and care for their mental disorders. Plus I always think, what if they clean up their act one day and want to have kids sober? Better care for mental disorders would also be the appropriate response to the gun violence vs the gun control bs.
There. I hit reproductive rights and gun control all in the same post. :-P

Christian = Edward Anastasia = Bella Kate = Rosalie Christian's interns are Jessica and Angela And so on and so forth. She changed names and descriptions. No one is a vampire or werewolf or anything supernatural in the fic, it's an all-human fic.
Basically she took the existing characters, and some of their personality traits, and wrote a whole other story.
Any of yall familiar with the Mortal Instruments series? City of Bones? That started as Harry Potter fanfic.

MrsAggie It's true, we're much more tame I like it though!
I totally agree that we need better mental health care in this country. I think it would take care of a lot of the issues going on!
whiskeyandwine I think the judgey part is that instead of using birth control, the woman keeps placing her kids for adoption (that would be my assumption at least). I do think there are plenty of wonderful parents out there that would gladly provide a good home for those babies, but there are also so many kids out in the foster system that IMO it's not a good thing. I'm not necessarily saying this hypothetical woman should get an abortion every time she gets pregnant (that's another debate that I'm not starting here!), but it would probably be better for everyone involved if she had the access to or knowledge of different birth control options. I don't know. It's not something I'm going to get heated about, but it's not an ideal situation IMO.

Ah I see. I don't know who half those people are, lol. For some reason I thought it would be more related. That's interesting that it's basically the same story. It kinda makes more sense now when I think if Ana as Bella though (from the little I know about Twilight). zi have heard of the Mortal Instruments series because a friend of mine was reading them recently. I'm trying to remember if she told me about it being Harry Potter related! Makes sense though, she's also obsessed with HP!
pooh8402 - I didn't know that about Mortal Instruments! That's crazy.
Maybe flameful: I totally read fanfiction.
More flameful: I wrote some fanfiction when I was younger. It was mostly about NSync. Don't even ask to read it because it's long gone but yup.. I kinda forgot about that until now, haha. I don't think anyone else ever read it though!

I love fanfiction sometimes. they're great for quick mindless reads. a friend of mine used to be a fanfiction writer, now she's writing real books, with a real live publisher and everything. she said fanfiction was a great way to get her feet wet and to learn HOW to write, with immediate feedback and stuff.

Now THAT was a confession..
Hahahahahahaha. You win! I have never ventured into attempting to write, I just do a lot of reading. I read real books, too, though! H teases me about my fanfic reading habits.

I don't think that six pregnancies all ending in adoption is ideal, I just don't think it's something that should be judged.
Let's not pretend that access to preventative measures and sex education are easy to come by in this country, particularly in a state as conservative as TX.
Also, many of the nurses on GBCN make me SUUUUPER self-conscious talking about all the shit that gets talked about their patients. I'm generally all, "She doesn't care that I'm not perfectly groomed!" but then there are days that I'm convinced my nurses are on some message board being all, "You should see the not groomed patient I had today!" :?

Exactly. When I want substance, I read a real book. When I want a mindless read I go to fanfiction. Clearly it's been a successful beginning for a lot of writers.
