If a stranger was trying to get a child walking home from school, they could easily just read their name on their backpack and say "Ohh, hey John, your mom told me to pick you up!" No stalking required.
C1 is going to a great school in a nice area, and this happened to two girls walking home last year. I don't know about the name part, but he approached and tried to get them to go with him.

I agree with walking home alone not having their name on it, but I don't think anybody here said their kid would be walking home or to school without an adult.

Add me to the lame group. I'd have things monogrammed, but not his backpack. I can't help but think of it making him even a bit more susceptible to stranger danger.

I didn't say anyone said that, I was just giving an example.
I'm not into monograms but if someone gave G a monogrammed backpack, or one with her name on it I wouldn't think twice about letting her use it for K. Though if/when she started to walk home by herself I might think differently.
A will take the bus to and from school so it really should not even be a concern, I just always tend be more cautious. I've even told him that we will come up with a secret code word that only DH and I will know, so if someone tries to talk to him and or try to take g home, they'd have to know this secret word.

If I may suggest testing him to make sure he follows the secret code rule? My mom always used a password for us, and if anyone came to pick us up, we were supposed to ask for the password. My mom tested me once when I was in kindergarten by sending in her friend to get me. I failed the test because my reasoning was that I knew her, therefore she wasn't a danger.
