So H and I are going to a dinner party on Saturday night. It is hosted by a colleague of his, and several important people in his department will be in attendance.
The problem is that they will be serving exclusively Indian food. I will be 12w at that point, and while I'm not violently puking anymore (yay!), my stomach is still really sensitive and I'm still mostly eating bland foods and have major food aversions to anything with strong or spicy flavors. My gag reflex is really sensitive, too, so if anything goes in my mouth that doesn't agree with me, it just won't go down. We are "out" publicly so everyone there will know I'm pregnant. I honestly don't know if I'm going to be able to eat much beyond naan.
I really don't want to offend anyone or be impolite. How would you handle this?
I would probably eat before and then if there is anything you can maybe munch on get that. That's a hard situation because you don't want the host to feel bad that you can't eat, but yet you don't want to sit at the dinner table looking bored.
I would either eat before and blame your not eating on pregnancy stomach issues, or have your h give his colleague a heads up as to why you're not eating. I just wouldn't want him/anyone to prepare me a special meal and go to extra trouble.
Does the host have children by chance? Maybe your H could just mention something beforehand about how you're really looking forward to it but that you are still having some pregnancy nausea so not to be surprised if your appetite was smaller?

No children. Host is a young, single guy who likely doesn't know much about pregnancy.
I hear you. Indian is basically my favorite food ever and one of H's coop students was graduating and invited us and a few others for a big meal before he returned to India. I had to turn it down because the smell of basically everything was making me sick.
Worst case scenario maybe fake a C sickness if you're really worried it'll end poorly?

If you think the smell will bother you, I would politely decline using pregnancy sickness as the reason but send your H along. If you do go, I would have your H warn the host of your sensitive stomach and let him know you may stick with the more bland food options if you are feeling queesy. But I would expect there to be a mostly plain rice dish and the naan and yogurt sauce.
I would pre-eat a light meal and then eat what you like. If anyone looks at your strange just tell them your stomach has been sensitive.
As you may recall, I have never eaten much dairy, so dinner parties are tough for me. I just eat what I like and stay away from the rest. It's never been that big if a deal.
Indian is a bold choice for a dinner party--it's probably the least crowd pleasing (I can never get anyone from work to go with me, ha!)

Yeah, the host is Indian, and the whole party is predicated on "I'm going to have my mom come over and make the most amazing authentic Indian food you have ever tasted." And we do really like all the people attending, and I'm looking forward to seeing them.
Non-pregnant, I'd totally be game and at least try everything. But pregnant, I'm just like "GIVE ME ALL YOUR CARBS."

That makes sense. Mom's have magical cooking skills. I hope I get some when I'm a mom!
Hopefully she makes delicious Samosas and you can eat them. They have seasoning but aren't spicy. So delicious. I am hungry now, ha!
Eat before you go and eat naan there. I love naan, so this is a winning situation for me! If anyone asks, just say that you aren't hungry or aren't feeling well. I don't think you need to worry about this.
