Our pedi said to go straight to 2% milk at one year old. He said the AAP recently modified their recommendations on a bunch of stuff, this included. (Another was infant fluoride supplements. Told me to stop giving them to her.)
I realize they do this from time to time, but it makes me nervous. Lol. When DS was 1 of course they said he needed whole milk bc the fat is important for the developing brain.
Interesting. I haven't heard that. I'll have to ask at DS2's appt in 2 weeks. DS1's pedi said we could switch to whatever we were drinking at 18 months. He didn't drink much milk anyway, and was always at the top of the growth charts.
I buy whole milk. If you get the organic it lasts forever anyway. If we're out, I give her 2%, which is what we drink, but I don't think whole dairy is harmful. (Fat free and low fat cheese is an abomination unto the lord, LOL).
I vote for whole milk. ODS actually still drinks whole milk at home, and he is 3. YDS is on it and H prefers to cook with it. My Pedi said at least until 2. As far as I know, it is a good source of fat for brain development. As far as childhood obesity goes, I am pretty sure it isn't milk causing it. I think it is sugary drinks, chips, etc. I think the latest studies actually showed people who drank whole milk weight less. I remember seeing that on here, I think.
We do whole milk and if I were you I would too. That extra fat is good for brain development. I haven't heard anything on the AAP changing their recommendation. Interesting.
I do think that size plays into it. C is 75th percentile for weight and has always eaten a ton of solids. My pedi did ask about his diet and what he ate before she made the recommendation (ostensibly to make sure I wasn't just feeding him Cheetos and Mountain Dew and that his diet was otherwise balanced and healthy).
Weight gain is not a huge concern for him because he's so big, anyway, and he doesn't really drink more than 8-12 oz of milk a day anyway. He prefers water.
We don't drink cow's milk (intolerant), but I can't get worked up about the extra fat in it. I still put a big scoop of coconut oil in rice when I cook it for my family and add things like hemp or flax seed or protein powder to smoothies. There's a huge difference between good fat and most of the highly processed crap that sits on American supermarket shelves. In your case, I would still go with whole fat milk.
I drink whole milk. The several of the vitamins in I milk are fat-soluble, so they can't be digested properly without fat consumed at the same time. As long as it's part of an otherwise healthy diet, WHOLE MILK 4LYF! Lol

I saw this, too.
DD is on the smaller side (>24lbs at age 2) and we will continue whole milk indefinitely though she will occasionally have low-fat milk if we are in a restaurant or birthday party.
I don't drink milk and DH prefers lactose-free milk, so the milk is bought specifically for DD. She drinks, at most, 12 ounces a day, normally more like 8.
I think there have been a few fairly recent changes in there recommendations. I visited a pedi friend who has 2 month old twins and she mentioned the milk as well as the recommendation to stop swaddling at 2 months.
My pedi still says whole milk from 1-2 we will see if she changes that rec at 15 month appt. Since we prefer 1% I put my almost 3 yo back on whole milk (when she isn't at school) because I wasn't about to buy 3 types of milk, 2 is enough.
Our pedi recommended the same re: 2% milk at 1. She was getting enough fat elsewhere in her diet and in his experience kids had less constipation drinking 2% v. whole.
ETA: DD1 was below 50th percentile for weight and he still stood by his recommendation, which he made two years ago.

We did whole milk from age 1 to age 2. The rest of the family was drinking 1% so I was buying 2 kinds. Starting at age 2, everyone was drinking the same milk. Sometimes I buy 2% or sometimes its 1%. Whatever I happen to grab at the store.
The difference in fat content verb whole and reduced fat milk appears to be around 1.25%. I'm pretty confident DD1 ate enough cheese and yogurt to offset that.
We do whole milk, but I'm another who does not believe that fat=obesity. Research points more to simple carbohydrates/sugars/sugar replacements being more closely tied to obesity than "good" fats. I buy a whole, organic milk from grass-fed cows and also make yogurt out of it (full-fat yogurt is the only yogurt worth eating, IMO ). I also put grass-fed butter in my coffee, though, so I may be a little crazy!
Also, I know I've said it before, but organic in and of itself does not mean the milk has a longer shelf life. The reason for that longer life is ultra-pasteurization. I personally do not like buying ultra-pasteurized milk. In any case, the cartons may state a date far in the future, but once the milk has been opened it should be consumed in ~10 days. (/soapbox)
We all drink whole milk because I don't do low fat dairy for anything. But, we are not milk drinkers. My kids get their fat and vitamins elsewhere and maybe drink 1/2 cup of milk between the two of them daily.
