I have a lot to consider this weekend and I just need to vent..
So I have been teaching on a temporary certificate for the past 3 years and I have attempted to get the professional certificate but it is based on a test and I hate math and I have failed that portion twice. This last time I took it I got really close but it's only offered every other month and you have to wait a month to reschedule to take it.
Anyways, I got a job working at a retail kids toy store (a mom and pop store.) and I've been on the job 3 weeks. I enjoy the job but honestly it isn't where I want to be. It's minimum wage but they took a chance on me and I was pretty desperate. And I like that she was willing.
Yesterday afternoon, I got a call from the school I've been teaching at and the vice principal called to offer me a position as a support staff as I can't teach until I get a professional cert. he said he wouldn't change my rate of pay but I wouldn't be teaching, I'd be support with the ESE wing. But I'm sure he will finagle it so I'm either A. Substituting or B. Tutoring accommodation children. So I told because I am making a lot more then the store.
So here is my dilemma, I absolutely love the kids store and love that they gave me an opportunity. But I feel like as soon as I approach them with my school schedule they will get rid of me and I feel awful because they did take that chance on me. I also though want to quit but I'd have to go on another seach for a second job because I don't make enough to support myself.
Anyways if you followed this far thanks! I have to get to work I'll check in later!

That sucks! When they hired you, did they know that you were a teacher/going to be going back to full-time teaching once summer was over? Would you still be able to do nights/weekends at the store, or would you have to completely cut it out?
I would say to be honest with them, and what's going on, and go from there. That's definitely a tough spot to be in. Good luck!

I'm confused. Did you say you'll be making more at the school?
If you'll be making more at the school and if education is where you want to be, this is a no-brainer for me. Take the job. It took SIL like 2 years as a teachers aide to get a teaching job at the school she wanted.
Now as for the toy store, I understand they took a chance on you, but as long as you were honest in the beginning and at the very least if you are honest when you take them your schedule and explain that education is where your heart is, then it sounds to me like they'll understand. And if they aren't understanding and supportive, you probably wouldn't have wanted to work for them long-term anyway.
My thoughts: Take the school job. See if the toy store will work with your schedule. If they won't, find another 2nd job.

I agree with Sapphire. If education is the field you want to be in, then you can't let perceived obligations to someone else hold you back. Yes, they were kind. And you can give them the benefit of the doubt and approach them honestly. Let them know you love working at the store, but you have an opportunity to advance your career in the field you most care about. Be thankful and let them know you you'd like to stay on part-time or if they need a full-time person, you will stay on until they find such a time.
I am sorry I haven't had a chance all weekend to respond but here's the update.
The school does pay significantly higher so it was a no- brained to take thre position. My problem was telling. The retail store that I wanted out after they at the interview seriously took a chance on me. I felt really bad but as of right now, I went and talked to the mgr and told her my situation and she was okay at the moment, she said she would put me on for nights and weekends. But I don't think after speaking with her, she's going to keep me as she had a quick response and I left. Maybe I am reading into it but idk. Anyways thanks for the prayers and opinions, you all are my rocks!
