I like Alex a lot. It's such a classic and I don't find it to be odd if it's standalone. I have a nn name too. People always ask me is it short for the longer version. It's not. I like my name anyway.
Ryan is a good strong name. Also I think it's a classic name not trendy. I know men named Ryan and toddlers named Ryan (and yes a girl or two). But I'm not a stickler for that kind of thing. Maybe because my daughter is most likely going to have a boyish (in America) name!
If this had been a boy we we going to use the name Bennett. I also liked Anson, Beckett, Blake, Elliott, Lance, Adrian and our son is Everett. Those may be too untraditional for you.
