Have they peed on the hard surface? This is going to sound gross and weird, but do you remember if the pee had a brown-ish tinge to it? If it did, then one of them could have an infection.
Our female kitty only peed outside of the box when she had an infection.
First, in my experience regular nature's miracle does nothing, the cat specific one is a little better but the best I found was anti icky poo (only problem is you have to either get it from a vet or online and it's $$$).
Second, get some Dr Elsey's Cat Attract litter - it really does work (unless there's an underlying medical condition).
Third, enough with the vinegar - it won't neutralize the pee & will just make it smell worse . No Bleach - that will mix with the ammonia in the pee & make some really toxic gas (think, concentration camp killing gas ).
GOZF I know you saw the replies but I just have to mention again to never use bleach on any pee. Even dog or human pee. We all have ammonia in our pee even if it's different levels.
I was told that a guy at the barn I used to ride, went to clean a horse stall and used bleach. They found him passed out inside the stall. When he woke up he said the last thing he remembered was seeing these fumes, lol.

Eureka makes a spot cleaner called "eeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!" they sell it at petsmart, it's not too expensive and it makes the pee smell disappear. I always used it as a spot treatment on the carpets before I used our floor cleaner, it did wonders.

Yep! I found out the hard way .... I didn't realize my cat had pee'd on the top of my washing machine, and I was using bleach to clean up the whole basement (floor) so I figured it would be a good use of the left over solution to wipe down the machines... you could seriously see the fumes - luckily it smelled so bad I a) immediately opened a window and b) started using water to dilute it!
I hope you find your solution soon! I'm like you, had cats all my life and never had a litter issue until a few years ago. It was short lived thank goodness. Turned out that using Petsmart's Everclean was the solution. And it's truly the best litter I've ever used. It clumps into tight balls (lol) and smells clean without being a fake perfumy smell. The litter I was buying was scented and the manufacturer must have changed the scent because it just repelled my cat.
I know of two people who have multiple cats and have them trained to use a kitty door. You'd never ever know they had pets. Zero smell. Cats don't stink it's their poo and pee that does. I always say when I lose Toblerone and Lady Marmalade my next cat will be trained to use a door. ETA the door leads to an enclosed area outside so it's not like they are running free.
Everclean is freaking AWESOME. Just try to get the low dust & unscented stuff.

lol.
We tried the kitty door thing.
That was a big fail. The little cat got it, no problem, but stupid Annabelle didn't realize that you could push your way out just like you pushed your way in. She would just stand by it and scream until someone opened the flap for her. We figured she'd pick it up eventually. Nope.
I have no advice, but I had to laugh because when scanning the posts, I thought yours said you were KNEE DEEP in cat pee, as the Weeds thread was right above yours.

Honestly, last night it smelled like we were KNEE DEEP in cat pee.
Ugh. I feel for you. Now that we have three cats, I'm surrounded by cat pee as well. I'm going to need to stock up on Target bags for how often I'm cleaning litterboxes
Are you able to move one of the boxes somewhere else?
So, my monsters have developed bad litterbox etiquette. It started with Ol' One Eye deciding it was cool to poop RIGHT OUTSIDE of the box. Gross, right? I hate her for it, but I've been thinking, "well, at least it isn't pee."
Clearly one of these dicks can read my mind, because this week someone has started peeing outside of the box too. Last night, I spot cleaned THREE TIMES with white vinegar, because someone is persistent. And then I mopped.
I know that I need to take them both to the vet to see if something is wrong. I've taken PoopButt to the vet already, and they were like, "Pooping on the floor? What a bad kitty. But she's healthy!!" But this is a new issue, so off they both go.
My question is, how the eff do I get this smell to go away? Everyone says white vinegar, but it's not cutting it, smell-wise, and it's clearly not deterring the offender(s). My instinct is BLEACH, because when I get grossed out, bleach makes me feel sanitary and in control. Is that right? Do I need Nature's Miracle? Does that stuff even work?
Help me. My house smells like an animal shelter, and I don't like it.
ETA: I have two giant litterboxes that are kept very clean. And the girls get along, it's not like Feline WW3 up in here.
ETA2: Fortunately, this isn't carpet I'm dealing with.
Possibly stupid question - how often do you dump all the litter and scrub the boxes? I try to assume most people do this already but am surprised at how many don't, and I know for some, it's made a difference.

Four litterboxes on the main level, two in the basement
Cleaned at least every two days although he preferred every day. Plus right after he used it once the cleaning was done please.
Once a week and two boxes with two cats is not picky. Or you aren't a sucker. Hmmm....
GOZF sorry the kitty door didn't work. I know my two would be like :? if I tried to get them to use a door. I figure they are both in their teens so why push it. But my next cat will learn if it kills me.
Randomcdn, in my experience with doing rescue and having a lot of exposure to cats, I've honestly found that too many boxes just creates a super picky cat and results in more issues. Obviously keeping a box clean is important but too many boxes is almost like giving a child too many choices. They just end up being too fussy and picky. They need some structure. I don't know if that is a good analogy but anyway....
My cats don't go upstairs and we have no basement so they share one very large box that is cleaned daily. Toblerone is the best. He'd shit in a oatmeal box if that's what I provided. Lady Marm likes some room for her big ass to turn around.

I've got two Litter Genies (one per box) and it's the best thing EVER. I started off buying their refills but now I just use trash bags in there. No smell, it takes a while to fill up.
