I really, really need to finish the series...I stopped at book 4 for some reason. I did love books 1-3, though.
I found the latter part of the series to be way better than the first part. I actually think book 3 was the one that hooked me!
I love them all, but I agree... The last half of the series was better than the first. Almost like the first few books were meant for younger audiences and the last few were more geared toward adults.
I'm teaching a YA class to seniors this year, and we're reading it. I'm super excited!
Ohh! What else is in your curriculum for this class?

It's only a half year course, so I'm breaking it up into different issues that teenagers face/may face. We're reading a few novels, and then watching movies/documentaries.
Here's what I have so far. Please feel free to suggest anything, too! This is in no particular order, and the units are still a work in progress.
Novels - Impulse by Ellen Hopkins: teen suicide, depression, drug addiction Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes: bullying, body image Various short stories for a LGBTQ mini unit...I have the name of a book that I'd like to order from amazon. I'd like to do one gay/lesbian story, one transgender, and one questioning.
Documentaries/Movies Cry for Help - teen suicide and depression (before Impulse) Bully - bullying (I'll probably watch this before reading Staying Fat...) Juno - teenage pregnancy The Breakfast Club - stereotyping, hardships of home life, pressures of school ?? MTV True Life "I'm Changing my Sex" episode (I used to watch this when I taught "Luna", but now I'm not sure it will fit) Ryland's Story - YouTube clip.
I may have forgot something, but that's the gist of it.
I just finished Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld a few days ago. I liked it, but I didn't love it. I'm reading Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosh right now and am enjoying it so far.

She wrote a book? I was wondering what ever happened to her blog.

Yes, she wrote a book. It's very much like her blog, including pictures. It talks a lot about her depression, so some of the subject matter is a little heavier.

I will have to check it out. I have a spaghatti nattle keychain in my classroom.

OMG this would be such a fun class to teach!
Look at Lisa Ling's "Our America" series for he Oprah network for great documentaries. I really liked the transgendered one she did.
