Definitely check others carriers. Getting homeowners in a hurricane zone can be hard, but I've never had trouble with renters content insurance although I hear the people we just bought our house from had trouble getting renters on their temporary place.

Definitely keep trying. We lived in a hurricane-prone area for a while (deep south Texas) and we couldn't get homeowner's, but we had NO trouble getting renters. I had good luck with Allstate for that.
We didn't have trouble getting it in a flood-prone neighborhood, but that was pre-Irene, pre-Sandy. It was flood prone in the way that it flooded up to our front door step once in the ~21 months that we lived there, and the inside was ruined by flooding during Irene.
It might be tougher to get now, not sure -- we've since moved. Definitely call a number of carriers. Or better yet, call an independent agent who deals with a number of carriers and talk to him/her, and have him/her quote shop for you. Who knows, they might find you a cheaper auto policy or bundled renters/auto too.
We lived in a seismic area and we had to get an earthquake rider on our insurance, but we were never denied coverage (we had AAA at the time and bundled with our car insurance). The rider was more than the actual insurance policy, though, and it was also about $400/year. I would imagine there might be a hurricane rider for wind and water damage? Our rider covered fire caused by gas leaks caused by earthquakes, shaking damage, flooding caused by earthquakes, that sort of thing.
