My H has a severe deficiency. His level was undetectable at the time of diagnosis. He is now on 50K IUs once a week. He will be on it for life apparently. His Endocrinologist recommends 1000-2000 daily for everyone.

Oh wow, did he have any symptoms? Did he notice a change once he started taking the supplements?

He originally went to the doctor because his eye had been twitching non-stop for at least a few weeks. His doctor figured it out on the first bloodwork try. Looking back though, he did have pretty bad dark circles around his eyes and he was so tired all the time. He could take a 4 hour nap in the afternoon and still sleep all night. His Endo tried to reduce him down to 10K twice a week because the 50K can sometimes upset his stomach, but within a few weeks his eye would be twitching again and the dark circles around his eyes came back.
It is a bit of a running joke in our house. He is from California and moved to Canada for me. He hates it here. Even though it is amazing, he just hates that it's not the US. So now he jokes (pointedly) that Canada is trying to kill him from lack of sunlight.
I had bloodwork done in May and my vitamin D was 16 (30-100 is normal). Doc told me to take 50k once a week. I was just tested again 2 weeks ago and I'm at 64, so I'd say it's working perfectly.
Do you know what your level is? That would determine how much you need to take.
If you have no idea, I'd recommend 1000-5000 a day. You can't go wrong with that.
I've been super deficient the last couple times I've had bloodworm done, but have been horrible about consistently taking vitamin D. Just curious how much others take.

I was on 50k once/week until my levels reached normal, now I'm at 2,000/day. They've been holding steady through the summer but I will likely have to increase in the winter. ::grumbles:: stupid Pennsylvania ::grumbles::

I just finished up 10 weeks of 50k 1x/week, and next week I start an otc dose daily -- I think it's supposed to be 3k/day but I need to call and confirm this. I just don't remember what she told me to do.
