How much of a pain in the ass is it to change your name on your passport? I have a passport in my maiden name that I haven never had a use for. Got married 5 years ago, changed my name, and never updated it.
Now my mom and I are planning a trip to Ireland in September, before she can no longer walk. She has to cross this off her bucket list as she's been talking about it my whole life. Can I use the passport in my maiden name if my license has my married name? Is that even an option? Do I have to just suck it up and get a new passport?
I just did this. You have to send a certified copy of your marriage certificate and your old passport. Mine got caught up because the certificate wasn't certified so I had to order one from the county I got married in, but other than that, it was just a matter of waiting.

I am not a regular poster on this board, but you can just book your trip using the name that's on your passport. They won't be checking your license. I have been doing this for years...
Easy. I did it by mail. Mailed them my old passport, an official copy of marriage license & a check for the fee and got it all back plus my new passport in a few weeks.
Have your plane ticket issued in your maiden name. That way it matches your passport. Don't even pull your license out at the airport; use the passport.

I live in a large city, so I was able to go down to the passport agency. It took a few minutes while I was there, then I got it a couple of days later. It couldn't have been easier. But, like PPs said, you can just book it in your maiden name. (I just don't like doing that because I'm neurotic and want my ticket to be in my legal name in case of an emergency)

I just waited until it expired and did then. Until then I booked everything in my maiden name. (we lived abroad when we married so I had to use my passport).
I've been divorced for 5 years and I haven't changed my passport yet. It's super expensive so I'm waiting until it's closer to expiring. I just book in my married name and never show my license.

Yeah, it's not difficult, but I don't think I'd try to do it now if you want to travel in September. Just book your flight in your maiden name, and use your passport as your only ID for flying.
