Someone brought up anka and it reminded me of her chickens which made me think about H4S and her transatlantic cruise with all the kids which lead me to think about Nesties that had babies while I was on MM. That made me think about cindy and jenny.
Somehow I got to thinking about the girl who used to roll her own toilet paper, which got me to thinking..
What is the craziest way to save money that I've missed in my years-long hiatus?
Make your own laundry soap was big on here for a while.
lol. Does anyone remember the day someone posted complaining about the high cost of dusting supplies and BAM! The thread exploded. Vinegar! Cloth towels! No Pledge for you!!!
In the last year? I'm not sure the board is interested in saving money like that anymore-we're in a new stage of having our shit together and deciding how much is too much cash to hoard.
Posters here have definitely gotten less uptight about money in the past few years.
A while ago, someone posted a link from MM on TN and it was some rant about how people were being irresponsible about going to Starbucks. The actual post was a bit nutty, like "my coworker spends THREE FIGURES ANNUALLY at Starbucks and she's going to require welfare in her old age" and everyone made fun of it here. A good time was had by all.
I'm a bit like "uh, yeah, weren't there some people here that used to agree with that overall thought?".
It is interesting how the board has changed. When I started coming here I was fresh out of college, poor, SLs and just married. We're still on the lower income side of the bell curve here, but rather than threads focusing on budgets and debt payoff it's taxes and investments.
Although MM will always be on the side of cutting cable

I will never cut cable.
The only reason I would cut cable is if it meant I could keep my cleaning person.
We've talked about her here a few times around the holidays, but I can't forget the woman whose H lost his job and then had to take a drastic pay cut, and the two of them scrimped and saved all year to be able to give the kids Christmas gifts. They even skipped a few meals so that the kids would have enough to eat. All without going into debt. I hope they're doing OK.
(That obviously doesn't fall under the "crazy ways to save money" post, but it's something that's stuck with me since I first read it.)

I remember this poster. Her story made me cry and so thankful for what I have.
I gave it consideration once but I just love it too much. I mean, I really love it. I love you, cable. HBO (kiss). Bravo (kiss). HGTV (kiss). ID (kiss). They're like my children, for crying out loud!
This topic actually dominated my family birthday lunch on Sunday. MM would be proud. First of all, my parents are paying $250 a month for cable/internet/phone -- 2 cable boxes (only one of which is a DVR!!!), and I think HBO, but nothing extravagant. Holy fuck
So I did the whole "YOU MUST CALL AS SOON AS YOU GET HOME TO THREATEN TO CANCEL BECAUSE THAT AMOUNT IS ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING." My mom didn't seem to get the part where you don't actually cancel but have to actually talk to the people who deal with that stuff to get the good deal. She was like "Well, I really wouldn't cancel, plus I feel that we get a lot of entertainment for that monthly charge, and there's no competition where we live, so they wouldn't give us a better deal anyway and really, we do watch a lot of TV" NO NO NO NO NO.
So we then got into a discussion of when my sister threatened to cancel, actually DID go through with it, and came back a month later with a way lower rate. My mom said she'd never make it. But the rest of us thought that, what with Netflix and all of that, we could entertain ourselves for a few months on series we'd never watched before. But then we all wanted to go back.
But really, I think cable is a dying concept and I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years we have some sort of service for live news and sports (only because my husband would insist -- I don't care about those things) and pretty much any series is delivered for binge watching or once a week on Netflix or Amazon Prime or iTunes or HBO Go or what-have-you. So maybe none of us, including the die-hard TV lovers, will have cable then!

I've had quite the hiatus too, ever since DS2 was born. But I certainly remember the good ol' days of MM. Rationing milk, family cloth, peppergate, cutting cable (although we actually did do that last year and don't really miss it). Actually, I was just wondering about Cindy the other day. Anyone know how she's doing? The last I heard her DH went crazy or something and she thought they were going to divorce. I never heard anything after that but I always wondered.
Wow. This did not provide me with the entertainment I expected! I guess all the crazy stayed on TN.
The news of Kwynn breaks my heart, I had stopped following her blog awhile back.
The parents who didn't eat are heartbreaking too.
The dark shower girl makes me laugh, only because I had a conversation with a teacher friend a year or so ago about how I hate turning on the lights in the morning before I'm fully awake and she told me she showers in the dark while she's waking up. Be proud of the low power bill. My BFF unplugs EVERYTHING but her fridge and stove every day. If she's not using it, it's unplugged. She'd unplug the stove it it weren't so hard to get to.

Peppergate!
Remember the girl who refused to put her grocery cart in the corrals because of her kid? She'd just leave it in the parking lot.
We cut cable for several months too. Then DH decided it was Orioles time and he couldn't stand it. We're on a much cheaper plan now.
I've wondered about Cindy too.
rachelnicole aren't we wedding date buddies.... or maybe our due dates were close together or something...

I admit that I have done this. After I load Elijah in the car I am too paranoid to leave him to return the cart unless it is right next to my car. I am not really afraid that anything will happen to him. I am afraid someone will see and call the police or something. Flame away.

Remember Gia's nastiness of pregnancy post that totally went crazy on TN? Hahahaha. That sure freaked a lot of people out. I wonder how many decided not to have kids after that. Lol.

I think Cindy and her H are still married and now have another little girl. I'm still friends with BrideEmily on FB. While I don't remember the denture post, she is doing well. She is pregnant.

BrideEmily posted that her teeth were in horrible shape and she was considering getting them pulled and getting dentures. Same for her DH.
I also don't have the greatest teeth, but this idea seemed so over the top crazy. Just very extreme!
Is this her second or third kid now?
I think I missed that post.
This is her 3rd. The first one was given up for adoption. She is close with the adoptive parents and sees the little girl often.

I don't remember the denture post either, but I am FB friends with BrideEmily and Racole (people always got she and I confused). Remember Volenti? She was so damn insightful.
