H and I need to pick tile for our new guest bathroom - we've already decided on a light gray, but I'm trying to figure out what size/shape. The room is TINY - not quite 8' by not quite 4', so we don't need a lot. My favorite shape/size is 12x24, which we have in our kitchen, but that is way too big. Should we do a smaller rectangle (6x12) - or should we just go for square? Opinions please!
We have a teeny bathroom. We are opting for a matte hex tile with dark grout. My H was in the too-much-grout camp too, until we looked at a few inspiration photos and realized that he really liked the look.
I have a thing about continuity in flooring (mostly a color thing rather than size/shape), but I would have no problem using a large format tile in a small space. I do think it winds up being a more modern look though, so that is something to consider.

We did this in our last house and it looked great - we installed ourselves and it was super easy to grout b/c most of the tiles are on sheets (12x12) and the grout lines so uniform. I did the grouting and it really was easy.
It was this tile
And our post-bathroom look was similar to this - wainscoting and black marble tile.
Oh and you can also do honed granite in black or basalt to get a similar look with larger tiles:

We definitely lean towards the modern; I worry a little that orienting it across the room will be weird since it won't be 2 tiles wide and up the room may look weird because we've got a trench drain going across the end of the room for the shower.
I can't find a photo, but I saw a really interesting tile layout (maybe a bathroom on tv?), that might work in your space.
It reminded me of a zipper, because there was a very small offset, which gave the full tiles in the middle the illusion of being centered, with the slight zig zag thing going on. If you use a grout that is close to the color of the tile it will be less noticeable, but I loved the contrast in the tile that I saw.
ETA: I think that the tile running parallel to the door might help give the illusion of width, especially with the proportion of the tiles.
I did on our backsplash. I'm not that impressed. Stains still seem to cling to it and it was HELL to get into the joints.
Bummer. I was hoping to hear good things.
It might be worthwhile in a shower or something, but it was overkill on the backsplash. The benefits just don't outweigh the PITA installation process.

Any chance you could get a pic?? I'd love to see it.
Thanks. I think it would work running along the long wall like that but I think my dad would want to do it the other way so it runs parallel to the shower drain. I may try to dig out the stuff we have leftover from the kitchen and lay it out to see.

Do this. Honestly, I'm a big fan of keeping the same (or similar) materials throughout, and will probably at some time in the future replace the vinyl in the 2nd bath with similar tile from the master bath...
ETA- Our baths aren't large either - 5x7 or so - and we went with 12x12 tiles just because we had them on hand.
We put 12x20 tiles in our small half bath. I'm not sure about its exact dimensions but it is basically a 31" vanity next to a toilet. I think it looks good with the larger tiles. The two at the doorway are actually 20x20 because it transitions to that in the hallway/mudroom.
It says black but it's more like a charcoal, just super nice and matte. Didn't think I would go for 12x12 but at $3.50/ft it was hard to beat! Now to decide how to lay it. I like this pattern:

I like the offset/running pattern that you show - it's easier to make look good in any room - especially if your room isn't exactly square, which can happen.
