This guy is literally everything that turned me away from God and Christ. I found my way back, but I cannot express how much the comment about not being able to worship a God you could beat up truly disturbs me. I can't imagine worshipping a God I have to live in terror of.
I would not be surprised if this guy turned into the next Jim Jones.
That was discussed in the comments of RHE's blog post. Apparently this is pretty similar to JJ's behavior when he was a charismatic pastor.
I have a friend who was a member of Mars Hill for years back in the day. She finally wised up and left after he told her that he was the only one who could choose her husband. She was in her 30s at the time. The stories she tells about his sway over the congregation is insane.
We found out a few years ago that DH's family dentist, one DH's family had gone to for over 30 years, was a member of Mars Hill. Everyone in the family immediately found new dentists because we did not want to have anything to do with any member of that "church".
Geez. I had only heard about the book issue. When I was going to church, everyone loved him. I wonder what they think now.
I think within his church, people are starting to leave. And what is left will be the remnant that goes from being church to cult.
Outside of his church, I think evangelicals honestly don't know about his truly vile spew. They know he's patriarchal, but they eat that with a spoon. They know he's a little rough around the edges, but think that's "being real." I think if more evangelicals read the stuff that RHE compiled, they'd be just as disturbed as the rest of us.
I read all of the WWII thread yestetday and it literally only scratched the surface. I wasn't surprised at all. Glad people are starting to speak out, MH has been crumbling for a long time. I have loved people VERY close to the top of this church and they will never fully recover from it. MH is a thinly veiled cult.
YES. This needs to be more obvious. I walked by the one near Pike Place a couple weeks ago and had to resist the urge to raise my middle finger at the occupants. Ugh.
I have been meaning to un-friend my FB friends who "like" MHC. I'll check for Storyville, as well.
