My cousin and his wife (and 3 boys) were stationed in Hawaii for years and absolutely loved it. They always talk about wanting to go back. They did mention the high cost of living but said being military offset that.

Hells no.
I grew up on an island in Alaska so I've experienced firsthand the HCOL, isolation, expensive flights that aren't always easy to get and can take a full day of travel, lack of shipping from certain places... add that to the fact that heat/humidity makes me grumpy and it's not for me.
That being said, I do have a few friends that have moved there for one reason or another and LOVE it.

SIL and BIL are there with the coast guard and they love it. They have 4 kids who love the beach. SIL's mom lives in San Diego and goes out every 3 months or so.
My nephew is currently stationed there and he's loving it. (No, I didn't read past the first page to see if there were any issues or discussions to make this a five-pager. lol.)
I probably wouldn't want to live in Oahu or Kaui (totally butchered spelling) but sign me up for Maui or Big Island! Especially just for three years.
I would only do it if financially I didn't need to work, or if I already had a job offer prior to moving because otherwise I'm sure it would be impossible to get a job in my field.
