DH and I have some extra cash and have decided to get a new mattress and bed. Our current setup is from IKEA and no offense to anybody else with an IKEA bed, but ours sucks so so bad. It is just a mattress on slats - no boxspring. The mattress is about 4 years old and already in terrible shape. Two of the springs have "sprung" (for lack of a better word, LOL) and have left lumps on both sides of the bed. It's really uncomfortable. The bed frame is holding up ok but like most IKEA furniture, it isn't built for the long haul, and I'm afraid that if we put a new mattress on it and add a boxspring it won't be able to handle it. We plan to spend the bulk of our money on the mattress since DH is a big guy, and both of us have back issues. For the bed I'm leaning towards the sturdiest frame we can afford, along with a wood or metal headboard.
This weekend we are going looking, but we can't decide where to start. IKEA is absolutely out, even for their priciest mattress. I'm pretty much over them for the most part anyway. I am thinking that we will pay a premium a department store like Macy's so not sure about that route. Also, I am really not so sure about buying from one of those mattress stores that advertise like crazy. They seem kinda pushy and I wonder about the quality. Tell me if I'm wrong. What about Costco? We love Costco and would definitely consider buying from there. What other options are there?

We recently ordered a 10" memory foam mattress from walmart and LOVE it. It is very highly rated by Consumer Reports. We now have one in our master, guest room, and DD1's room, and my parents are planning to buy one after sleeping on our guest bed. The brand is Spa Sensations. Definitely spend a little more to put a foundation under it. We ordered that from Amazon.
We went to one of the mattress stores (Sleepys). They sell the traditional brands - Serta, Seely, Simmons, etc. We got a Simmons Beautyrest, which is a combination of foam and springs. W paid $1700 for a King, including a split box spring and deliver, but not including the bed frame. The mattresses all have warranties as well.
I'd also see if you could look up specific mattresses on Consumer Reports if you have it, or at least check online reviews.
If you are getting a regular mattress, not memory foam, you really should go to a real mattress store where that is all they sell.
You can learn more about the innards and try them out. Take your time and ignore the hard sell. Get price quotes-there is sometimes some room for negotiation, and they will usually write the price on their card for you. Sometimes they are obligated by the company to sell at a certain price and can't lower the price, but they will usually throw in some extras that make it worthwhile.
Don't expect any one store to carry all the brands, and don't expect similar models at a big box store to be the exactly the same as the model from the mattress store. It may be close enough, but to get low prices they often get some part of it made more cheaply, like the fabric, less padding...something, so check it out.
I've bought mattresses at both a chain mattress store (sleep country) and at Costco. I wasn't so worried a out testing out the mattress at Costco as I was young and didn't think about those things, but I was young and it was a beautyrest or other known brand. After about 4 moves and maybe 10 years my sister has it now, so no complaints. I did like being able to test out mattresses at the mattress store, though once on decide what you want no reason not to compare prices.
And I have friends and fame who have purchased mattress sets at Macy's and been happy with them too. Sort of like going to a mattress store and testing them out.
I know you said you were going to start looking this weekend, but if you find something you like and can wait it might be worth waiting till Labor Day weekend for sales. Or ask if they would price adjust if you buy before the sales start.
We went the Sleepys route. I have to try a mattress. They did have a range of brands and styles- we ended up buying a brand I'd never heard of that's held up well.
Much as I love Costco, I'm not comfortable trialing a matteress there.
I would check Macy's prices and then go to Costco to compare. I think Macy's has good sales on mattresses because they want to get you in the store to buy other stuff.
