Sounds like something I would say, too, without even thinking about it THAT way. I am sure she knew you that you meant absolutely nothing by it and didn't even realize. If she even noticed herself. It's not like the context surrounding it was iffy or anything.
I don't think its a big deal. I'm married to a black man. He would think nothing of it. I would think your boss, even if he took note of the monkey statement, would realize that you meant no offense in your statement.
I certainly don't think so. The phrase refers to actual monkeys and how they mimic each other. I didn't even think I knew it could be used in a derogatory way until I came to the nest! Or maybe I knew it, but had never heard it used. Anyway, I think you're fine.
Have we fallen this far that monkeys cannot even be mentioned?
I guess I was thinking more along the lines of that the statement might have come across as though I was comparing her child to a monkey. Which was NOT the way I intended the statement to be taken.
It's a very common phrase used to describe children's behavior of all races.
And also, a baby's dress with a monkey on it is not racist either.

Thanks for clearing this up.
As for the OP, I don't think you have anything to worry about.
