We do out loud reading in home room every morning where I teach (7th-8th grade) and my students LOVE the chicken soup for the soul books. Not sure what you need it for, but if you're using them with teens/young adults, there are chicken soup books specifically for those age groups, too.

What about Ana's Story (written by Jenna Bush)? I know it's not by a serious author, but it's an interesting read. A few of my former 8th graders read it and loved it. These were kids that didn't enjoy reading.

You could use long form articles. This website has a bunch specifically for teens. longform.org/tags/high-school The first one listed is the article that the movie Blue Crush is based on.

When I was a kid I liked reading "All Creatures Great and Small" and the others of that series by James Herriot. Not a young adult protagonist, though.
