Has anyone read The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily Danforth?
It's a YA book, but doesn't read that way. It's a very well written novel about a girl growing up as a gay teen in Montana in a fundamentalist household.
It takes place in the late 80s and early 90s, so I'm finding myself relating to a lot of the music and culture.
It's not an action-packed book, but it's interesting from a variety of perspectives. First, the content itself is great and authentic. Although I enjoy the dystopian genre (super common in the YA area these days, obviously), it's refreshing to read a book about something that the average person might be able to relate to.
Also, this book was banned by the Delaware School Board. Although they claim it wasn't because the character is gay, but rather language, this is a load of homophobic bullshit because there are many other books they kept with similar language.
