I like my nails. I get gel french manicures about twice a year and regular manicures once a month. I put a clear coat on the third day after the manicure and I can usually stretch the color without chips a week or at bit longer and then I paint them clear or ballet pink until my next mani pedi combo
I swear by this nail polish. I had terrible nails growing up. I could never get my nails very long before it tore into my skin from being thin and weak. I started using this stuff and now have long sturdy nails. It has worked well for my mom and sister, MIL, and her mom too. Manicures ruin my nails so I never do them.
ETA: It's only a couple dollars at Wal-mart and minimal effort. I clean it off about once a week and put on a layer. A day or two later, I'll add another layer then nothing until paint starts chipping off....rinse and repeat.
I do my own nails. I might get a manicure once or twice a year but they are a waste of money for me b/c my nails take forever to dry (2-3 hours) so getting them done always results in a chip or smudge because they don't let the polish dry long enough.
Good nails were the only thing I got in the genetic lottery. I was even born with a perfect set of nails
The only special thing I do is use Rainbow Honey cuticle balm or cuticle oil on them. If they break I will cut and file them but otherwise they require no maintenance.
I keep mine trimmed completely and very rarely wear polish. I hate the feeling of dirt or anything under my nails, and I'm usually in our garden daily.
I love manicures but the polish chips so quickly. I now get clear coat and likes to keep them short. My nails break but I'm not sure why so hence the short trim. This post reminds me that I have the Hard as Nails sitting untouched for a long while. I need to use it. Also should pick up some cuticle cream. I really feel better when my nails look nice.
They finally started growing in my late 20s. I never polish them because I knit so much, I either don't have time or the tips wear off. I give myself pedicures though
I always had crappy, thin, short nails until I started pre-natal vitamins. Now my nails actually grow and are hard. I have yet to find a base coat and polish that will last more than a day, or even a few hours though. My nails must be made of Teflon or something bc polish peels right off no matter what I do or buy.
Nail Envy has been the best product for my nails. I paint them myself about weekly and always have a couple coats of Nail Envy underneath. It's saved my brittle nails. You can get it at CVS for $18 or Amazon for $10.
I try to wear gloves if I am scrubbing or stuff like that or it my polish chips.
I love Nail Envy! I also use EVOO on my hands at night. I have awesome long fingernails.
Mine break when they grow, regardless of what I do, so I keep them cut short. I only do pedicures as I have ruined more manicures than I care to think about. A couple years ago, I was going to a wedding and the last thing I did before getting on the plane was get a pedicure and manicure. I wrecked the manicure before I got on the plane! After that, I vowed no more....I can piss away $35 in other ways!
I keep them very short and get a manicure every 10 days or so. Without a manicure I would pick at them. Keeping them short makes the manicure last longer.
Getting pregnant is the best thing that ever happened to my nails. They're healthy, they grow fast, and they're strong and rarely break or peel. I haven't been polishing them because they grow so fast!
But, that's a bit of an extreme measure in the name of nail health.

My nails grow quickly and are pretty strong, but my cuticles are always jacked because I pick at them when I drive (and I drive A LOT). They look nice when I get a manicure, but the polish is always peeling off (not chipped) within a couple days, so I usually don't bother. My feet are probably more attractive than my hands!
I've had pretty good luck with this new Sally Hansen Miracle Gel polish. No need for a special lamp. I usually get 4-5 days with zero chipping, and another day or two before I feel I should redo them.

Do you prep your nails with a swipe of acetone before you polish them? It helps remove any oils on the nail and helps your base coat stick to your nail.
Mine have always grown quickly but I've found if they aren't polished they break easily. I do my own manicures at home. I'm pretty decent at it. Usually about once a week I remove old polish, trim my nails and use a scrub on my hands. I paint my nails while watching Tv in the evening. I always use a quick dry spray or drops (I like OPI rapid dry and zoya's quick drops). I feel more put together with polish on my nails. I also use gloves when cleaning or doing dishes so the polish lasts longer.
I have nice nails and DIY my mani/pedi. I have all the nail tech tools and usually do a French manicure on my nails and sheer pink on my toes to keep it neutral.
I keep mine short and unpolished. One of the hazards of my job is that my nails take a beating. They are always getting broke/bent and if I try to put nail polish on it take about 2 minutes before it is chipped to hell. People keep telling me to try the shellac manicures but I worry that I will spend that much money and they will still get beat to hell.
