Hi Has anyone persevered with The Book Thief? I am about a third of the way into it, and am really struggling with the way it's written. It's very choppy to me and makes it difficult to follow along. Is it worth it to stick it out? I loved the movie, and bawled at the end, but the book? I'm kind of meh about it.
I read it years ago and I loved it. It was sad, but I really enjoyed. I do not remember struggling to get through it - life is short, if you don't like it don't read it!

I remember struggling a bit until about halfway or more, than it was a rush to the finish for me -- and from my experience, do not finish it sitting at the table in the office lunchroom. People WILL look at you strangely if you start bawling for no reason.
It's one of my favorite books. I listened to it on audio and was blown away. I'm reading it on my nook now because I want to be able to savor the writing, and I wanted the story fresh in my mind before I watched the movie. I find the perspective so unique, and the story is hauntingly beautiful to me.
I felt like it picked up and Death's "voice" seemed quieter as the book progressed. I was glad I finished it and I usually have no hesitation putting a book down.
I barely made it through. Unlike others, I really enjoyed Death as the narrator. I did not enjoy the book, however. I thought it was slow and predictable. I wanted it to have its own story, instead of just being muddled with WW2.

I'm not really sure how it could have had its own story. The events of the story happened during WWII, they were tied together. There would have been no real reason for major parts of the story arc without the events of and surrounding WWII. If the setting were changed it would have been a very different story.
I tried some time last year and had to give it up. I sensed it was good but I was not in a place to read it and I wasn't invested in the characters. Sometime I hope to try again.

I really wanted to love this book but just didn't. I too found it very choppy and not an enjoyable read for me. It was very sad but I had difficulty feeling the real ness of it if that makes sense.
It was ok just not my style. I like more of a thriller and faster paced
