Well we are about a year and a half in and not done. I mean we have things set up but we are kind of repurposing the use of rooms as we live here, so there's lots undone. Probably won't be done for at least another year.
What do you mean by decorated? Boxes unpacked? Furniture placed? All pictures hung?
I don't think there is any rule. We have been in our house a month and are unpacked with the "main" rooms (living, dining, kitchen, etc) basically all done. We still haven't hung all our art, though, and are still buying various decorative accessories and furniture pieces. It's presentable though.

Painted...decorated...done.
We still dont know what new furniture we need to get for certain rooms. Out main thing is we wanted to do a little at a time and not go into debt over it.
Sent from so-called "smart" phone. Please forgive any errors!
We won't ever be fully done! It takes time to find and buy the right pieces and get things painted/what have you. I think as long as people aren't sitting on unpacked boxes when they come over 6 months after you have moved in it's all good
I finally decorated our last house about 2 days before we put it on the market to sell (I was there for 8 years).
Almost 2 years into the current house and it's still not 100% decorated. I need to repaint the whole thing, make curtains for most of the windows and pillows despite having the fabric bought. Seems like 3 kids and life gets in the way of hanging a picture.
Now if I had $$$ and could afford someone to do it then at that point it probably would decorated.

Well, if money grew on trees we'd get everything done after we close on the house and before move-in! But that's not happening.
The only thing we want to have done before we move in is painting and any flooring changes, but mostly because it will make things a helluva lot easier for us in the long run. Decorating? We're going to take our merry little time with that so we don't drive ourselves nuts. And we're still unsure about what to do with our third bedroom so I foresee it being a storage room for a while.
I don't think there's a typical timeline at all. We all have our priorities.
I've been here a year and still haven't had my housewarming party because it doesn't feel ready! Really, I'm slow and picky. If I just went to a Rooms 2 Go type of joint and dropped the money and had everything delivered, I would've been done months ago. But no, I browse antique and thrift stores and Craiglist for what I want, waiting to find things at the right price, bringing it home, let it sit in the space, then take a month to decide what color I want to paint something.....sigh, I've given into the fact that it's a process and won't be finished anytime soon.
I think you have a long time for decorating! Especially if you are in a home you plan to be in for a while.
But unpacking and settled in, I would say a month or two. It amazes me to see people who still have tons of boxes everywhere when they've been in a house for a year or more.
Things are done when they get done. It's your house, so it is your timeline.
For me, taking my time to figure out what our needs really are for a particular space and waiting to get an idea of what direction we want to take decor-wise is the only way to go. I feel like we make fewer mistakes and save more money by doing it that way.
I've never understood the rush to get everything 'done'. I plan to live in my house for a long time, and I can wait to get it all right, although I can't imagine a day when everything will actually be finished. I like to tweak things and for things to evolve.
And I have lived here a year and still have boxes. We have done a lot of reno and just don't want to rush for the sake of rushing on the remaining spaces. We're making headway, but we want to have the rooms ready for the stuff before we unpack it all so it will have to wait. I don't really care if other people think it is weird...it is what makes the most sense to us, and that is all that is important.

We moved 3 months ago and right now on a very very tight budget until our previous house sell. My plan is to have the house ideally 70% decorated/done at 2 yrs and 100% at 3 yrs. I would like to live here without doing renos/decorating for a few years until we sell and move again to a forever house closer to the beach.
We've been in our home for just under 2 years. We tripled the size of our house, so much of our house was empty for a very long time. When we first moved in, we had furniture for our bedroom, dining table, and our sunroom. I also had a few things in my office but it was not decorated. We had a temporary kitchen table.
Soon after, we decorated a guest room and I add furniture to our craft room. About 6 months in we decorated our upstairs bonus rooms and put together our exercise room. I got another temporary guest room together around 9 months. A year in I started buying stuff for my office but it's not finished. 18 months in we finally got furniture for our great room, but still need a rug and accessories. I just got a new kitchen table.
I got A TON of comments from people about not having every room of the house finish. There are two of us in over 4000 sq ft. We don't need it all finish. Just try to ignore them. I'm much happier carefully planning rooms, researching furniture, make smart purchases, etc even if it takes a bit of time.
I expect to have our main rooms done in maybe 2-3 more years, I will probably start redecorating then!
We moved into our house a year ago and I formulated a three year plan for completion, but I will never be "done."
I've painted 7 rooms (and kitchen cabinets which = 10 rooms at least) in a year and we've bought furniture for 4 rooms. I still have a lot to do and I'm seriously lacking wall decor but it's a WIP!
We're two years in and don't anticipate being done for at least two more years. Unless you're willing to foot the bill I think it's kind of rude to give people a hard time about decorating.
I've been lurking over here, since we're in the process of buying a house, and wanted to jump in.
I think it's no one's business how long it takes you to "finish decorating" unless they are paying for it. But a big factor would be what you're moving from. We are moving from a 1 bedroom apartment to a 3 bedroom house. And most of our current furniture is hand-me-downs, or stuff we bought separately when we each were starting out living on our own. So we're not keeping much of what we have, and we're moving to a house where we'll have WAY more space than we currently do. We've decided to focus initially on our bedroom and the living room. I suspect our dining room will be empty/the place where furniture lives until we decide we don't actually need it for months and months, if not years. I want to be happy in the kitchen, in my bedroom, and in our most used living space. And even then, we're only prioritizing a new couch, so we don't have to move our old one that's falling apart. The rest will happen with time.
I still plan to have friends over to visit, well before the house feels "done". Because realistically I think it will be well over a year before I feel like every room feels good and the way I want it to feel.
Just don't invite people over? Or if it bugs people that much they can fund your furniture. Assholes. We're building a new house. We bought a piece already that needs assembly so it's in a box in storage. We'll probably have to keep our current furniture until we get some other stuff that we need that we didn't need at our old house. Like barstools for the island.
