"Hooking up" seems like such an ambiguous term. I always assume it means sex, but some people use it to mean anything from making out, to oral, to full-on sex.

UWR's Glossary of Terms
- Kissing - The act of touching lips and tongues together and occasionally messing up the hair of the person you are kissing. Might take place up against a car, but probably not in the car because then that would be "making out."
- Making Out - Involves kissing, but might also involve a gear shift in one's stomach and some mild over the clothing groping or dry humping. The removal of clothing means it is "hooking up."
- Hooking Up - Naked or topless kissing, groping and / or oral. Some people claim that to hook up means to have sex, but although it may involve having sex, it does not have to.

So, funny story: Hooking up to me has always meant full-on sex. When we were in college, eventual-DH heard this term and thought it meant going out on a date. So after some friends had introduced us, he casually asked me to hook up one evening. I may or may not have laughed in his face saying, "Uh, NO." He was hurt and dumbfounded but I didn't do casual encounters. It was a couple of weeks later while chatting over AIM that we finally found the root of the problem and agreed to a date.
