Every time I find a stylist I like, I go to them for like 6 months and they get promoted! Which is great for them, but I can't stomach the price increase. It already pains me to pay $45 before tip for a basic haircut. My stylist who I LOVE just got promoted. I was hoping to keep seeing her but she is now $75 for a haircut! That just seems like an insane increase!
Why is it that there are no options between Supercuts and $45 for a really simple haircut?
i also feel bad because I'll probably stick with the same salon, just try to find a different junior stylist. But it makes me feel bad if she sees me going to someone else.

My BFF is a stylist. She is the next chair to the owner of a chain of respected salons. Her rates are $80-120 (ACL city). She moves up her prices when she gets busier than she can handle. Stylist understand budgets. Don't feel bad, enjoy your cut, and be glad for them that they have developed their skills to move to the next level.
I have had her fix a few super cuts for me,when I couldn't schedule with her for events. I get the friend rate, but I was the first person whose hair she cut, when we were 12. I also found her first job at a salon when when she was 16 :-)

I feel ya on this. My girl used to work for a company and had to charge $120-160 for a cut and highlights. She moved to a different place where she is charged $50/month to rent a chair and now charges me $65 for the same thing. Now that we're moving I know I'll be back to paying way too much and having to deal with that new stylist awkward convo.
Can you go to a different place? One that doesn't have different levels of stylists? If you see someone with nice hair compliment and ask where they go to get it done.
I just snag the best deals on groupon and try new places. I despise paying full price at the salon. They're so expensive but I've learned that I suck at DIY hair-coloring.
I found my last stylist when he was first starting out. He moved from salon to salon, until he opened his own. As I had been such a long time customer (and sent him other customers), he gave me a price break and didn't charge his going rates. I think when I left he was charging $65 for a haircut, but was still charging me $45.
Sigh....I miss him. I moved last year and have found someone who does ok, but the last time I got my haircut, I had a bunch of straggling pieces from my bangs she missed.
I hate trying new people because it's never how I want it. I finally found Ned 5 years ago. He was well worth the $60+$20 tip. He cut my hair a few times and one day he was gone . So I let someone else cut it and I was really disappointed. I've gone back a couple times to try someone new but they were no Ned. I would pay him >$100 if that's what he wanted to charge because he was that awesome.
ETA: My hair is as simple as it gets, straight cut and thin the edges.
It doesn't hurt to ask if she will keep a preferred rate for loyal clients.
My stylist charges me $75 but his rates increased to $90 several years ago. As others said, he was in demand and this was a way to "qualify" his new business which I understand, but he didn't want to lose his book either. He did it without my asking. i love him and this is a splurge but no way would I have paid his new rate.
I get that it can be embarrassing to ask, but I don't think it is insulting to say you love someone's work but are dealing with a budget. If they can't accommodate you then they can understand why you are seeing someone else.
I go to the owner of a local salon and I think it's $40 for a haircut before tip? I can't remember b/c I'm usually doing partial or full highlights. It's only $90 before tip for a full highlight and cut.

I was wondering the same thing today! My hair is out of control and a cut at my preferred salon is so not in my budget, but I can't stand what super cuts does to my hair (and it's not complicated, I live in ponytails between donations!!)
Ugh ,that stinks. I get my hair straightened every 2 or 3 years and its very expensive (about 600.00). This year I decided to go with the level below master to save 50.00. Bad, bad idea...after sitting in this persons chair for 4 hours, she barely said two words to me, left me with one magazine for 4 hours (there are large gaps in the process while things set), and when I washed my hair 3 days later like allowed, my hair was as curly as it was before I did the process. It didn't take at all. Thankfully after a few exchanges with the owner I was able to get all of my money back. Its a bummer though b/c I can't justify taking another day off of work to get my hair redone so I am just wearing it in a pony tail every day and hate it (I have very poufy hair).
