I know this might be a long shot, but I'm looking for any YA short stories that focus on identity, especially in the LBGTQ community. I purchased How Beautiful the Ordinary, which is a collection of short works, but nothing is really standing out to me (however, I'm not finished with it yet). I'm teaching a YAL course to high schoolers, and would love to do a unit using these short stories. TIA!
Edit: I missed the part where you said 'short stories'. Reading fail. So sorry about that!. No clue on short stories. You might have better luck with poetry? But here are novels in case you need them:
Love Letters to the Dead. I just finished it. The secondary characters are struggling with their sexual identity, and the main character with the death of her sister. She gets an assignment to write a letter to a dead person, and ends up writing to famous dead people as a coping skill throughout the year.
The only other one I know of is Aristotle and Dante discover the universe. Two hispanic boys fall in love and from what I've read, just deal with everyday life. I haven't read the book yet, it's just been sitting on my to-read list.
