In Cannon Beach is Ecola State Park which is great for hiking, the beach itself, and an adorable little town with shops and restaurants.
Just outside of Cannon Beach is Astoria to the north and Tillamok to the south. Astoria is another picturesque seaside town (and if you're a Goonies fan, that and Cannon Beach is where most of the movie was filmed). Tillamok has the cheese factory and some great ice cream. There are also wineries in the area, but I can't personally recommend any since I was pregnant when we went.

we spent about 2 hours on Canon Beach - there were sea stars all over the rocks. We walked up to some place that was supposed to have amazing clam chowder and overlooked the ocean and it was just "eh".
We stopped at some wineries on the way from Canon Beach back to Portland.

the clam chowder place is Mo's. People rave about it but we are not fans.

Mo's is kind of overrated. The drive from Cannon Beach to Tillamook is picturesque. There is a place just off the route called Nehalem Bay winery where you can taste a lot of great wines for free. Also in the tiny town of Wheeler is the cutest little restaurant called Rising Star Cafe. They only take cash and have 4-5 tables but they have wonderful food.
In Tillamook the ice cream and cheese at the Tillamook Cheese factory are great. If you need a great place for dinner head even further south to the Pelican Pub and Brewery in Pacific City. It is right on the beach too with another big rock in the ocean, similar to Haystack Rock.
Sometimes we will go back to Portland via Astoria. You will can visit the Lewis & Clark reconstructed camp site, the tower in Astoria, the Fort George brewery and Pub. Or go to the beach at Fort Stevens and see the Peter Iredale shipwreck.
For a cool meal, you can stop at Camp 18 restaurant on highway 26.
Drive south from cannon beach towards Tillamook, there's a little old train that goes from Rockaway Beach (lots of knock knack shopping) to Garibaldi (a bar and a Dairy Queen) but the train ride is interesting and fun, and beautiful.
Then you can take highway 6 back to 26 to Portland, or you could continue down 101 to Lincoln City and Newport. There's a crappy outlet mall and a cool aquarium. Page me if you want Lincoln City recs, we go there several times a year
