Good morning, ladies! In 2 weeks, DH and I leave for 12 days in Italy. During that time, we're spending 3 nights in Positano. Thanks to some of the recommendations on here, we've booked a 3 hour boat tour around Capri on Gianni's boat. We're doing an early trip, starting at 10:30 AM, and we have to decide if we want to take the time (and spend the extra money) to do the blue grotto. What's the general opinion here? Is it a must, or are the other grottos just as nice, and not as touristy? We have no issue spending the extra money is it's something that is not to be missed, but if our time on the boat is better spent exploring other things, we'd consider skipping it. Thoughts?
Decide when you get there and see how you feel. If I remember correctly, we went past it toward the end of our trip. We were on the fence, but as we got closer we saw lots of other boats and an "assembly line" of in and out. In that moment we decided to skip it. No regrets.

We did a boat tour around Capri, and when we passed the Blue Grotto there were a bunch of boats around it and a line to get in. Plus, boats can't go through if the water is choppy, and sometimes they have to wait in there for a while. We did not go in, and I don't regret it.
We did stop at a couple of other grottos, and were able to swim and jump from the cliffs. They were more like alcoves than an actual cave, though.
We went into the Blue Grotto and I thought it was pretty cool. It is totally electric blue inside. But we didn't go to any other grottos. We got off the public bus, walked to edge of the water, and my husband was nervous about going into the grotto in a rowboat. While we were standing there being indecisive, a boat full of Asian tourists rolled up and people started leaping into rowboats. I told him that if they could get into the little boats, then we had to see whatever it was they were all lining up to see.
Our boat guy took a nice picture of us too so it was worth it to me. I don't recall it being terribly expensive.
Thanks, girls! I guess we'll just see what it's like when we're there. If we're there early enough that it doesn't seem like a cluster, we'll probably do it, but if it's really crowded, we might just enjoy our time doing other things on the boat. I wasn't sure if people had strong feelings about it either way. Trip advisor reviews are split between gorgeous & a waste of time.

We did Gianni's Boat around Capri as well. He took us into several grottoes around the island, but none like the Blue Grotto. All of the other grottoes you just sort of put the nose of the boat into and then back out. Part of the draw of the Blue Grotto is that it is pitch dark inside except for the electric blue water, and you have to take a small rowboat inside. We waited for a bit to get in, but didn't care because we were sunning and drinking wine on the boat while we waited. I don't remember it being overly expensive, and I figured we'd already come all that way, so we might as well go in.

This is good to hear. Thanks! I was pretty much set on us doing it, but then I read a lot of lack luster reviews, so I was second guessing it. It's not like we plan to make Capri an annual trip or anything, so if it's really something unique to see, we don't want to miss it.

We weren't able to get into the blue grotto due to choppy water, so our tour guide took us to the green grotto instead which was partway between positano and amalfi. We liked it.

We also went to the green grotto because of weather but I will go back. Italy is my favorite country. Have a great time!!! I would think it would be worth the extra effort
