How far into training are you at this point? Week 6 out of 18
What's been your biggest and smallest...
- Achievement during this training cycle biggest - sticking with all my runs, smallest - not going crazy - Struggle during this training cycle biggest - getting up at the butt crack of dawn, smallest - eating enough calories - Single meal that you've eaten during training biggest - we've been to a few BBQs where I totally gorged, smallest - banana and PB toast - Distance on any given run 17M, 4M - Realization about running/marathon/training in general I don't have to run every run as fast as possible, which is what I did the first time around. Easy runs make it manageable.
Who has races planned before their marathon? What are you doing to prep for them, aside from run all the miles? (taper, etc)Somehow I ended up with like 3 10Ks and one 10 miler. I'm going to at least take one rest day or make sure the day before is a short run.
Where did you run this past week? Bonus points for interesting pictures! No where interesting, just my usual haunts to the local lake near my house and did my 17 mile in a hilly route through North Springfield/Annandale.
When is your favorite time of day to run? When, all things being equal and ideal in time, energy and weather, would be your favorite time of day to run? I like to get out by 7-7:30AM. Not too early, but early enough so still have all my energy.
Why am I punishing myself with the most monster of weeks in my marathon plan right after my tri? Because I'm a masochist. Name something you do, marathon or nonmarathon related, that makes you or other people sometimes question your sanity Getting up at 5AM and earlier to run.
How far into training are you at this point? Week 2! =)
What's been your biggest and smallest...
- Achievement during this training cycle Going into this cycle more prepared and getting in some strength time. - Struggle during this training cycle Very tired muscles and less time since I have more commute time during this cycle - Single meal that you've eaten during training 6 cupcakes, yesterday. W.T.H. Tuggy. - Distance on any given run 8 miles/2 miles - Realization about running/marathon/training in general It takes a lot more mental strength than I remember
Who has races planned before their marathon? What are you doing to prep for them, aside from run all the miles? (taper, etc) No real prep- might run a 30k and half before, but haven't chosen/signed up yet. I REALLY like the idea of a 30k distance though!
Where did you run this past week? Bonus points for interesting pictures!
From my house to "Way down yonder on the Chattahoochee" no pics b/c I don't run with my phone. But here's some pics from Atlanta Trails:
When is your favorite time of day to run? When, all things being equal and ideal in time, energy and weather, would be your favorite time of day to run? I really prefer to run in the AM but I've been doing a lot of nighttime/lunch running lately. Nighttime mainly so I can get on the trails and lunch b/c I need to do some strength/swimming in the AM.
Name something you do, marathon or nonmarathon related, that makes you or other people sometimes question your sanity Get up at 5am, swim for 1.5 hours, then run at lunch.

How far into training are you at this point? Umm...a little over halfway? I think I still have 6 weeks to go
What's been your biggest and smallest...
- Achievement during this training cycle: Biggest - hitting my paces Smallest - sticking with my plan - Struggle during this training cycle: Biggest - these miles are getting painful! Smallest - eating... I get carried away with all the extra calories - Single meal that you've eaten during training Biggest: my partner makes a big brunch after my long run each week...eggs, bacon, French toast or pancakes and home fries Smallest: a shake or bar... Sometimes I can't eat after a long run - Distance on any given run Biggest: 18 miles yesterday Smallest: I think my shortest run was like 3.5mi - Realization about running/marathon/training in general Biggest: I am really stubborn and can do pretty much anything I set my mind to Smallest: I'm still not sure that I'm cut out for marathon running...anything over 13 just hurts and I want to cry lol
Who has races planned before their marathon? What are you doing to prep for them, aside from run all the miles? None for me. I had a 10k back in July... I just made that my tempo for the week
Where did you run this past week? Bonus points for interesting pictures! I am in ocean city, Md. It was so nice to run flat and sea level! I didn't take any pics during my run but I did get to see the sunrise
When is your favorite time of day to run? When, all things being equal and ideal in time, energy and weather, would be your favorite time of day to run? I am a morning runner! When it's not terribly hot, I like to start my long runs around 830 or 9. I do my weekday runs at 6am. I hate winter training when I can't run in the morning.
Why am I punishing myself with the most monster of weeks in my marathon plan right after my tri? Because I'm a masochist. Name something you do, marathon or nonmarathon related, that makes you or other people sometimes question your sanity I think just training for a marathon makes people think I am crazy! Getting up at 5am on vacation and running 18 miles definitely puts me in the you're-a-freakin'-weirdo category!
How far into training are you at this point? about halfway - 13 more weeks to go!
What's been your biggest and smallest...
- Achievement during this training cycle biggest - the ability to "run" the long runs smallest - my feet/plantar fasciitis seem to be a-okay - Struggle during this training cycle biggest - running during the week, the heat is just killing me - I didn't run this morning b/c at 6:15 the real feel was already 85 smallest - getting my fueling down during the long runs, still working on it - Single meal that you've eaten during training biggest - probably the time DH insisted that we get a half dozen donuts instead of one a piece after a training run. So I had 3 donuts by 2pm smallest - n/a - Distance on any given run biggest - 13 miles smallest - 2.5 when it just sucked and I couldn't do it anymore one day - Realization about running/marathon/training in general biggest - that I may actually be able to do this, although things may change now that we're getting to the serious distances smallest - getting up at 4am is not too bad once a week!
Who has races planned before their marathon? What are you doing to prep for them, aside from run all the miles? (taper, etc)
I only have a 5K planned in about 3 weeks - it's with the Houston Texans, and it's a fun race, otherwise I would be raceless since it would interfere with the long runs
Where did you run this past week? Bonus points for interesting pictures! On a treadmill! DH and I skipped our outside Saturday long run because I woke up feeling like crap. Attempts to do it later on Saturday and on Sunday morning were unsuccessful.
When is your favorite time of day to run? When, all things being equal and ideal in time, energy and weather, would be your favorite time of day to run? Probably the afternoon, while I love running in the morning because it's done early, I think I have more energy, it's not dark, etc. in the afternoon. Right now that's not an option because of the weather.
Why am I punishing myself with the most monster of weeks in my marathon plan right after my tri? Because I'm a masochist. Name something you do, marathon or nonmarathon related, that makes you or other people sometimes question your sanity Right now, just the marathon in general. People think it's crazy to get up at 4am every Saturday!
How far into training are you at this point? Over half way. 9 weeks left. GULP.
What's been your biggest and smallest...
- Achievement during this training cycle Biggest - 5k and 5 mile race PR's. Smallest - Some success in figuring out water/fuel strategies for longer runs. - Struggle during this training cycle - I need to focus on just completing this (my first) marathon. Instead, I struggle with wanting to get a certain time. I'm afraid I'll be disappointed if I don't meet the goal, and that would really be a shame. I need to keep perspective. - Single meal that you've eaten during training - Biggest - oh, it's been bad. I'd say half of a large pizza with cake afterward. Smallest - Probably just my morning oatmeal. - Distance on any given run - Biggest - 14 miles, Smallest - 3 miles. - Realization about running/marathon/training in general - How much more of the training is mental than physical. Physically, it sucks at times, but I can do it. The fortitude to just keep running, or get my butt out of bed before 5am is sometimes the hardest part.
Who has races planned before their marathon? What are you doing to prep for them, aside from run all the miles? (taper, etc) I have a half marathon this weekend, followed by 3 more miles after the finish. This is also one of our toughest mid-week schedules. To prep for it? Well, I'm worrying and obsessing about it. I'm sure that will help.
Where did you run this past week? Bonus points for interesting pictures! Just my normal trails - I'd love to add some fun scenery.
When is your favorite time of day to run? When, all things being equal and ideal in time, energy and weather, would be your favorite time of day to run? Super early in the morning. My brain doesn't seem to fully wake up until a few miles in. Plus I love the quiet.
Why am I punishing myself with the most monster of weeks in my marathon plan right after my tri? Because I'm a masochist. Name something you do, marathon or nonmarathon related, that makes you or other people sometimes question your sanity I talk to myself at work A LOT. I have my own office, so it's not horribly distracting to anyone else, but I still get teased about it. "Did I do that thing? Yep. How about this? Looks like it. Hm, I need to look into this..." I catch myself doing it constantly.
Where did you run this past week? Bonus points for interesting pictures! I am in ocean city, Md. It was so nice to run flat and sea level! I didn't take any pics during my run but I did get to see the sunrise
Where did you run? DH and I will be there for a quick weekend in September - I was going to just run up/down the boardwalk, but figure that may get a wee bit boring!
How far into training are you at this point? Week 2!

- Achievement during this training cycle : only one week in, so no real achievements yet - Struggle during this training cycle : n/a - Single meal that you've eaten during training : biggest - fish tacos - smallest??? - Distance on any given run : 8/3 - Realization about running/marathon/training in general
Who has races planned before their marathon? What are you doing to prep for them, aside from run all the miles? (taper, etc) : 30k, half marathon - part of training!
Where did you run this past week? Bonus points for interesting pictures! around the lake
When is your favorite time of day to run? When, all things being equal and ideal in time, energy and weather, would be your favorite time of day to run? EARLY am!!!
How far into training are you at this point? About a month away from race day
What's been your biggest and smallest...
- Achievement during this training cycle Pushing through despite my feet. Between resting and trying to figure out the best way to tape them, I've made it this far. - Struggle during this training cycle Getting out of bed at an early enough hour that I'm not doing my long runs in the heat. This didnt used to be such a struggle earlier this summer. - Single meal that you've eaten during trainingMmm the steak dinner I had the other night was pretty big. And good! - Distance on any given run For this training cycle farthest has been 11 so far (unless I count my marathon 2 months ago then its 26.2!) Smallest was 1-2miles. - Realization about running/marathon/training in general Always eat before long runs!
Who has races planned before their marathon? What are you doing to prep for them, aside from run all the miles? (taper, etc) I have a 5k the night before marathon day. So no real training for it. It fits into tapering perfectly.
Where did you run this past week? Bonus points for interesting pictures! Just around my neighborhood. That's too boring for a picture.
When is your favorite time of day to run? When, all things being equal and ideal in time, energy and weather, would be your favorite time of day to run? I like to run mid morning, when its still coolish. And all the sprinklers are on in my neighborhood and I run through them like a child. lol Why am I punishing myself with the most monster of weeks in my marathon plan right after my tri? Because I'm a masochist. Name something you do, marathon or nonmarathon related, that makes you or other people sometimes question your sanity Pretty much all the non runners in my life think that taking on subsequent marathons AFTER the first one is the craziest thing I could do. Of course they all thought I was crazy to do the first one too.
I'm staying at 100th st, so I ran from my condo to the end of the boardwalk then back up to fenwick island and back to the condo. I like running to fenwick so I can say that I ran to another state I plan to do my "track" run on the boardwalk and my 10mi tempo up and down coastal hwy again... I may venture to run on the beach one morning but my ankle is already mad at me, so not sure that will work!

How far into training are you at this point? 10 more weeks to go. I'll be on vacation for 2 weeks and I'll be really cutting back there, and then the final 3 weeks are taper, so I only have 5 weeks of hardcore training left. Kind of hard to believe.
What's been your biggest and smallest...
I'll answer for biggest.
- Achievement during this training cycle - I think my biggest achievements have been mental. I know I'm probably not in shape to have a big PR this year, for a few different reasons, and I think I've come around to being ok with this race being mostly for fun. - Struggle during this training cycle - Dealing with a lingering hamstring injury. It hasn't gotten worse, but I'm not really allowing it to get better with all of the training I'm doing. I'm going to cut my mileage way back when we go on vacation, and see if that helps. - Single meal that you've eaten during training - We went out to a hot new restaurant on Saturday night, and our meal ended up being the equivalent of about 10 courses, plus cocktails and wine. - Distance on any given run - So far, 20.25 miles. I'm supposed to run 22 as my longest. - Realization about running/marathon/training in general - Running with other people is more fun (assuming you like them).
Who has races planned before their marathon? What are you doing to prep for them, aside from run all the miles? (taper, etc) - I have a half in mid-September. I'm not doing any specific training for it. I've run the same half every year before my marathons, so it's a good way to gauge where I'm at and compare from year to year.
Where did you run this past week? Bonus points for interesting pictures! I've been running on scenic trails in/around wooded areas and next to rivers, streams, and lakes.
When is your favorite time of day to run? When, all things being equal and ideal in time, energy and weather, would be your favorite time of day to run? 7 am is perfect for me, or 8 am in the winter. It's not too terribly early. I prefer to run in the morning.
Why am I punishing myself with the most monster of weeks in my marathon plan right after my tri? Because I'm a masochist. Name something you do, marathon or nonmarathon related, that makes you or other people sometimes question your sanity Most of my non-runner friends think it's insane to run double digit miles. Most of my runner friends think it's strange that I eat very little before my morning runs, even my long run. I usually just drink a cup of coffee and eat a banana. I also eat smaller portions of gels/gus more often; ideally, I'll eat 1/3 of a Gu every 2 miles. This is the difficulty of having a sensitive stomach!

Where did you run this past week? Bonus points for interesting pictures! in the National Park along the river
I'd post a pic---if SOMEONE COULD PRETTY PLEASE TEACH ME HOW TO PASTE A PIC FROM THE INTERNET? I feel like a dummy on this one.
When is your favorite time of day to run? When, all things being equal and ideal in time, energy and weather, would be your favorite time of day to run? I like to run in the morning; like 7am. It's cooler, my stomach cooperates better, and I like getting my miles in before the rest of the day gets in the way.
Name something you do, marathon or nonmarathon related, that makes you or other people sometimes question your sanity. My husband thinks I'm crazy when I get up and run in the dark. My neighbors probably do too (but I know you guys understand that this is not crazy).
How far into training are you at this point? I'm on the 4th week of Pfitz 12/70, but have been training pretty hard since June in hopes of a half PR.
What's been your biggest and smallest...
- Achievement during this training cycle Biggest: 2 5k wins! Smallest: Highest mileage week ever (by a mile, lol)

- Single meal that you've eaten during training Biggest: I've splurged at quite a few BBQ's Smallest: A gu lunch during mid afternoon runs.
- Distance on any given run Biggest: 18 miles Smallest: 2k neighborhood loop with my oldest.
- Realization about running/marathon/training in general Biggest: As much as I love marathons, I'm ready to focus only on shorter distances. After this cycle, of course. Smallest: Doubles are extremely difficult for me. It takes 24 hours for me to recover, so I'm a mess on the 2nd run. I have a new respect for our relay runners!
Who has races planned before their marathon? What are you doing to prep for them, aside from run all the miles? (taper, etc) ME! A half in early September, and a half in early October. I'm doing a short taper for both.
Where did you run this past week? Bonus points for interesting pictures! I ran the Western Maryland Rail Trail. It is delightfully flat and full of shade.
When is your favorite time of day to run? When, all things being equal and ideal in time, energy and weather, would be your favorite time of day to run? Early morning.
Why am I punishing myself with the most monster of weeks in my marathon plan right after my tri? Because I'm a masochist. Name something you do, marathon or nonmarathon related, that makes you or other people sometimes question your sanity The non H&F world, definitely those early mornings. For this board, it would be the double digit treadmill runs!
How far into training are you at this point? Apparently 10 more weeks to go.
What's been your biggest and smallest...
- Achievement during this training cycle Biggest - I'm shocked how many miles I've gotten in so far. Smallest - It hasn't been that hard to get up and run in the morning. - Struggle during this training cycle Biggest - Figuring out what my race pace should be. Smallest - I keep tweaking my plan, I really should just let it be. I know adding a mile here and there isn't goign to make a difference, but I keep tweaking things. - Single meal that you've eaten during training Biggest - Probably my chicken and waffles for my birthday. Smallest - I had chips for lunch yesterday while we were running around. - Distance on any given run Biggest - 18 Smallest -2, I needed to just squeeze a couple extra miles in. - Realization about running/marathon/training in general Biggest - I am still in denial that I am actually running another marathon. Smallest - I am worried about fitting the miles in once the days get shorter, but I think it will all workout.
Who has races planned before their marathon? What are you doing to prep for them, aside from run all the miles? (taper, etc) I plan on doing a bunch of 5ks in Sept/Oct, I should make one of those a 10k, but I don't wanna!! I may move some of my long runs to mid week because I don't like racing the day after a long run.
Where did you run this past week? Bonus points for interesting pictures! Just London and (the cruise ship) on the way to Greece. Pics in the next post
When is your favorite time of day to run? When, all things being equal and ideal in time, energy and weather, would be your favorite time of day to run? Probably 9 or 10 in the morning. I am adapting to morning running, but I would prefer to sleep in.
Why am I punishing myself with the most monster of weeks in my marathon plan right after my tri? Because I'm a masochist. Name something you do, marathon or nonmarathon related, that makes you or other people sometimes question your sanity I actually like racing 5ks.
Thanks, @vtcupcake! I got it! Here's a representative photo of where I run (along the canal towpath).
Are you local to me? We run on the towpath most weekends.
skwcm80 - I don't think so--are you in the Cleveland area? (If I remember right, I don't believe you are) I think there are lots of old towpaths that now make great parks.

No, I'm not. It looked like a pic I posted a few weeks ago and I got excited that I might have an H&Fer close to me.

Where did you run this past week? Bonus points for interesting pictures! We ran an out and bacl from downtown indy starting on the Central canal and went north to the LRS where we normally start.
When is your favorite time of day to run? When, all things being equal and ideal in time, energy and weather, would be your favorite time of day to run? The earlier, the better.
Why am I punishing myself with the most monster of weeks in my marathon plan right after my tri? Because I'm a masochist. Name something you do, marathon or nonmarathon related, that makes you or other people sometimes question your sanitywaking up at 4:45 on a Saturday to get my long run done.
How far into training are you at this point? I'll be three weeks out after this weekend's long run. Three effing weeks.
What's been your biggest and smallest...
- Achievement during this training cycle big: getting through without injury, small: only missing three runs in 11 weeks (two were vacay, one was sick) - Struggle during this training cycle big: doing my PT exercises regularly, small: starting to not drink booze in the next three weeks. - Single meal that you've eaten during training big: hell, I don't know. I eat big all. the. time. small: does not compute - Distance on any given run big: 20 miles x 2, with one more this week, small: 3 miles - Realization about running/marathon/training in general Hm....this is hard. I don't really know!
Who has races planned before their marathon? What are you doing to prep for them, aside from run all the miles? (taper, etc) um, I've had a lot. I'll have had three halfs, a 10k, and a couple of 5ks under my belt. I haven't done anything specific, other than rearranging some planned days to get my mileage in.
Where did you run this past week? Bonus points for interesting pictures! I ran a new route which would have been even cooler if I could have done the whole thing as planned. Here's a picture from one part...I think that road is the road I was running on.
When is your favorite time of day to run? When, all things being equal and ideal in time, energy and weather, would be your favorite time of day to run? I like mornings...all things equal, I like to head out about 8.
Why am I punishing myself with the most monster of weeks in my marathon plan right after my tri? Because I'm a masochist. Name something you do, marathon or nonmarathon related, that makes you or other people sometimes question your sanity I work full time, have three kids, and get up at the buttcrack of dawn (or put in the hours after my day is done) to do this. Why?! Oh, because I'm a freaking crazy person who is obsessed with meeting goals.
How far into training are you at this point? Starting week 13
What's been your biggest and smallest...
- Achievement during this training cycle Biggest: nailing my 16 miler a few weeks back at an awesome pace even though I prepared horribly for it. Smallest: I have no idea? - Struggle during this training cycle Biggest: getting in all of the midweek long miles. Balancing running and work is tough! Smallest: getting my butt out of bed on Saturday mornings - Single meal that you've eaten during training Biggest: Half of a large pizza, followed by ice cream. Smallest: A bowl of cereal? - Distance on any given run Biggest: 19 miles (my first of 2 20's is this weekend!) Smallest: 3 miles - Realization about running/marathon/training in general Biggest: You don't always have to train for a PR. Sometimes its ok just to run. Smallest: cold watermelon after a sweaty run is the tastiest thing ever.
Who has races planned before their marathon? What are you doing to prep for them, aside from run all the miles? (taper, etc) None for me. I don't race a ton, and I don't really like to race during marathon training. Instead, I will probably do a half about 3-4 weeks after its over.
Where did you run this past week? Bonus points for interesting pictures! Lakefront path
When is your favorite time of day to run? When, all things being equal and ideal in time, energy and weather, would be your favorite time of day to run? On weekdays, I like to run at around 4:00. Early enough that I'm finished before dinner, and I don't have to wake up early. Weekends - I like to be out the door by 7. If I'm going extra long, I get out earlier. I don't like for my run to take up my entire day.
Why am I punishing myself with the most monster of weeks in my marathon plan right after my tri? Because I'm a masochist. Name something you do, marathon or nonmarathon related, that makes you or other people sometimes question your sanity I'm pretty sure people question my sanity solely because of the marathon stuff. Oh well!
Okay okay I know it's Thursday and stuff but omg. OMG. And no one else would really "get" this except you ladies.
My father called me this morning to have me quickly tell him my itinerary for Chicago. Why?
BECAUSE HE IS GOING TO BE THERE.
OH MY GOD.
My father rarely gets a chance to travel to see me, and almost NEVER gets to see me race. I know he was looking for an excuse to come out to see the marathon, but was too intimidated to do it by himself because it's a chaotic weekend for the city and he didn't want to go it "alone". Well, he's been seeing someone for a while now (yay?!), and she invited him to a conference in Madison that wraps up that Friday. As in, two days before the marathon. And? his GF used to be a marathoner, and is apparently beyond excited about me running this race and when he told her that I was doing Chicago and it was that weekend, she was all like WE MUST GO.
So, while I'm all excited and over the moon that I get some more family support at the race, I'm a little because I get way more race yips knowing family is there watching me. I never had this problem when he'd come to my field hockey games, so I'm going to have to work on that mental aspect for the rest of training now too.
How exciting!!! I'm glad he'll be there. I agree, my family doesn't see me race much so the few times they do its make it more exiting
That's awesome, @vtcupcake! My mom came to one of my marathons, and it was so much fun having her there. She actually got all mama bear at the finish line with another lady who was trying to shove into her viewing spot trying to see her own daughter. No matter your age, parents are hilarious at these things. Lol Have fun with your dad!!
