I saw the segment on Sunday. This situation makes so upset, I can't form words. Luckily I don't have any dicks on my FB feed or I might have unleashed already.

I love John Oliver.
I have a local police officer on my FB and he is getting pissed about the police aspect. I get sticking up for your profession but I don't understand doing so blindly. There can always be bad people in any line of work. And them all of his friends were chiming in about how the cop probably thought he was reaching for a weapon bc he was shot in the front.
Not that it colors my thoughts on what happened, but what is the latest on the theft? I saw something that said the surveillance showed him paying for the cigars. What is the officer's reasoning for using lethal force?

I've been following it. It is hard to determine what the real truth is from what I read. Regardless if it was murder or self defense, many of the protestors are going about protesting the wrong way.
I hope the truth is fully revealed and justice, whatever it may be, is served.
The whole situation in Ferguson breaks my heart and makes me so angry. This is one of the responses that really resonated with me as a mom (and as a mom of two white boys). I can't imagine going through this as a mother or having to fear for my child in this way.
As the ongoing events in Ferguson, Missouri show us, America’s racial tensions didn’t disappear when George Wallace backed down from the schoolhouse door. Dr. King didn’t wave a magic wand, and we never got together to feel all right. White America remembers this at ugly flashpoints: the Rodney King beatings, the OJ Simpson trial, the Jena Six, Trayvon Martin’s death. White America recoils in horror not at the crimes – though the crimes are certainly horrible. It’s not the teenagers gunned down, the police abuse, the corrupt trials. It’s this: at these sudden, raw moments, in these riots and demonstrations and travesties of justice, White America is forced to gaze upon the emotional roil of oppression, the anger and fear and deep grief endemic to the Black American experience. Black America holds up a mirror for us.
And white America is terrified to look.
To admit white privilege is to admit a stake, however small, in ongoing injustice. It’s to see a world different than your previous perception. Acknowledging that your own group enjoys social and economic benefits of systemic racism is frightening and uncomfortable. It leads to hard questions of conscience may of us aren’t prepared to face. There is substantial anger: at oneself, at the systems of oppression, and mostly at the bearer of bad news, a convenient target of displacement. But think on this.
I have three sons, two years between each. They are various shades of blond, various shades of pinkish-white, and will probably end up dressing in polo shirts and button downs most of the time. Their eyes are blue and green. Basically, I’m raising the physical embodiment of The Man, times three. The White is strong in these ones.
Clerks do not follow my sons around the store, presuming they might steal something.
Their normal kid stuff – tantrums, running, shouting – these are chalked up to being children, not to being non-white.
People do not assume that, with three children, I am scheming to cheat the welfare system.
When I wrap them on my back, no one thinks I’m going native, or that I must be from somewhere else.
When my sons are teenagers, I will not worry about them leaving the house. I will worry – that they’ll crash the car, or impregnate a girl, or engage in the same stupidness endemic to teenagers everywhere.
I will not worry that the police will shoot them.
If their car breaks down, I will not worry that people they ask for help will call the police, who will shoot them.
I will not worry that people will mistake a toy pistol for a real one and gun them down in the local Wal-Mart.
In fact, if my sons so desire, they will be able to carry firearms openly. Perhaps in Chipotle or Target.
They will walk together, all three, through our suburban neighborhood. People will think, Look at those kids out for a walk. They will not think, Look at those punks casing the joint.
People will assume they are intelligent. No one will say they are “well-spoken” when they break out SAT words. Women will not cross the street when they see them. Nor will they clutch their purses tighter.
My sons will never be mistaken for stealing their own cars, or entering their own houses.
No one will stop and frisk my boys because they look suspicious.
My boys can grow their hair long, and no one will assume it’s a political statement.
My boys will carry a burden of privilege with them always. They will be golden boys, inoculated by a lack of melanin and all its social trapping against the problems faced by Black America.
For a mother, white privilege means your heart doesn’t hit your throat when your kids walk out the door. It means you don’t worry that the cops will shoot your sons.
It carries another burden instead. White privilege means that if you don’t school your sons about it, if you don’t insist on its reality and call out oppression, your sons may become something terrifying.

The cop didn't even talk to him because of the potential steeling. The cop stopped him for jaywalking or walking in the street, which I do all the time in residential neighborhoods.
They aren't even sure he stole anything. The video is vague and the owner never reported a theft, supposedly a customer is who called the cops.

Yep. Which is the exact reason they released that information even though it is irrelevant to the shooting.

I have been staying as far away from this as I can. I just feel overwhelmed by everything. My twitter and facebook are full of people who are so so so wrapped up in this and I can't believe the inability to step back and use our academic tool box. I can't.
Unrelated to previous comment; my friend is a white cop who had to shoot and kill a black perpetrator recently. It is adding another layer of stomach-clenching fear to all this for me.

He was unarmed, so what makes you think that this might be self defense?
I am so fucking sick and tired of that the line about protestors going about it the wrong way. What way should we go about it? There was no rioting when Eric Garner was killed, none when Trayvon Martin was killed, and so many countless others that we don't even know about. So no rioting may not be the best option but when you have a legal system that doesn't seem to work for you, I can see getting angry. I'm fucking angry. You see Michael Brown, I see a person who could easily be my husband, one of my brothers, or my son. Our lives aren't worthless, and we don't deserve to be treated as such. If you have an alternative solution, I'm all ears.

This whole robbery storyline is such bullshit, put out by the authorities to somehow justify this shooting, as in oh well what do you expect when you rob a place? It is completely irrelevant victim shaming. The cop had no idea there even was a robbery when he stopped mike brown for walking in the street. There is no reason that a stop of someone walking in the street should end w shots fired. I was sort of involved in an altercation not that long ago with someone who actually said out loud that he had a gun, cops were called knowing this and still approached him with a taser pointed at him, not a gun.

I totally agree with you.
Releasing the information that he was stealing if he was stealing is gross and irrelevant.
Releasing the information that he was stealing if he wasn't stealing is gross and implicates far more people than one horrible cop. How could you ever feel safe in that town?

I'm following, all too closely. I am raising 3 Black males. Feel free to ask skwcm80 about my nightmares, worries and fears. It is asinine that we must deal with this in 2014.
Do police shootings happen where you guys all live?
We have had 3 (I think) police shootings in my area recently. In all of the situations the shooting was ruled necessary. In at least one, the perception of a lot of people is it was not necessary. None were like the Ferguson shooting where a young man was just walking down the street. That said, it has caused substantial trust issues with police in our area. I was raised to trust/respect police and generally do. I am, however, finding that I can no longer make that as a blanket statement anymore. Too much wrong being done.

The best protest sign I've seen just reads, "I can't believe I still have to protest this shit." Exactly.
I don't know what to say, except that I'm so sorry that those who are dealing with this on the most personal basis have to read any bullshit whatsoever that somehow justifies it or even leaves open the possibility that this was anything but a racially motivated and class motivated murder of the powerless by the powerful.

I really wish there was more I could do! The ignorance of people on this whole thing is just appalling (no here). I've been speaking up when people say crap but there is no getting through to them.
I feel like the best I can hope for is to teach my kids to treat everyone like a person rather than a black person or a white person or an Asian person and hope that the next generation changes.
I am so sickened by this whole thing and people are raising money for the cop who is on fucking PAID LEAVE! This would never happen to a white person and anyone who says otherwise is in serious denial.

I was going to tag you because I was going to repeat something you said the last time this came up, but I thought better of it.
Do police shootings happen where you guys all live?
Not really. Lots of taser incidents that may or may not be justified.
My city has a notoriously corrupt police force that has been in the news for many bad things over the past few years.
One officer beat a helpless homeless man in a hallway that happened to get caught on camera. No justification for it at all. I'm so glad it was caught on video.
An off duty officer beat a man running in the park (detached his retina and several other serious injuries). He thought this man (who happened to be of middle eastern decent) had just harassed his teenage daughter (she had called her dad to tell him about it). He got some other officer friends to say the attack was provoke and the suspect was charged. Turns out the whole thing was caught on camera and this wasn't the man the off duty officer was looking for at all. He beat this man and he didn't even defend himself or see it coming. He was a local doctor running through the par from on location to the other.
