This bugs me for some reason. It is not a contest to see who can have the most babies and who can get pregnant the quickest. I have a larger family myself so it is not like I am opposed to big families -- it just seems like the Duggars caricaturize having babies. I certainly hope all goes well for her but yeah it seems way to soon to announce on People magazine.

I don't follow the Duggers or know anything about her, so take this for what it's worth.
I hate all of the "It's so EARLY to announce!!" talk. It stems from mentality of "what if she miscarries?!?!" and does nothing but further the notion that miscarriage is something shameful that shouldn't be acknowledged or discussed. Makes me sad, and makes getting/asking for support that much harder for those that need it.

I agree, but I don't think people who choose to wait to announce are sending the world the message that miscarriages are shameful.
However, maybe this is just the super cynical side of me, but I wonder if the early announcement was chosen strategically. There wouldn't be nearly the amount of chatter about it as much if they announced in October---so let's give them something to talk about now. And, I'm going to hell for typing this, perhaps even--announce early and get paid. If worst case scenario something happened, they could sell that story eventually too. Maybe the Duggars don't think like that, but I'm sure some "celebs" do. When selling stories about your life, it's all about the $.
oy. Can you imagine if one of the girls has to face infertility in any way with all of these uber fertile mertles dancing all around them.
This was my thought too. If I was her daughter I would be looked down on for sure. I hope for all her children's sakes that they and their spouses are all very fertile.

That's not my attitude at all. I would make a different choice because it would be news I wanted to share only between my husband and I at first, followed by our parents, followed by our close friends, followed by the world in general. In this case, it seems like she peed on a stick with her sisters practically watching and announced her positive in front of 20 people right away. Which makes sense if that's the kind of environment you are used to, but I'm a bit more private and feel differently about my marriage than she does. Her way is not wrong, her way is just not the way many of us would do it, which is why it seems foreign.
I really thought they would wait awhile and maybe Jill would still be a midwife for awhile. Funny how all of this stuff is happening less than 2 weeks before the new season premiers. I don't think they are hurting for ratings so I'm guessing they are all attention whores or the $ is really good from People.
My grandma and grandpa waited till their wedding night and she had her first baby exactly 9 months after her wedding date (wedding was Feb 2nd, baby was born Nov 2nd) and then she was pregnant with her 2nd baby two months later and had her 2nd child on Oct 2nd. Which means she was pregnant with her 2nd child on her first wedding anniversary. Poor grandma!

I don't think not telling people is sending the world a message that miscarriages are shameful. I think it is more of peoples comfort level. Having to tell everybody that they have miscarried could be difficult. I did not want to tell everybody I was expecting, and then tell everybody I had miscarried if that happened. I cannot imagine telling the world on the cover of people and then having to tell the world of a miscarriage if that happened. But whatever makes each person confortable.

I am not saying that any individual here was thinking about the possibility that she'd m/c. However, that attitude in general (!) definitely stems from a "What if. .." thought process.
So, yeah, what if. She tells everybody she had a m/c. IIRC, her mom had one and was open about it, right?
These are not people for whom privacy is a priority. Obviously. Lol
I just can't imagine getting pregnant in the first week of being sexually active. For Pete's sake, that would suck!
Amen. I mean, good sex takes some work. It doesn't just happen right off the bat (usually). Now her body will be going through all the pregnancy changes at the same time! Oof, no thank you.

I'm guessing they announced because they wanted to share the news themselves vs. having a family member slip on the show. They said there was no way they could hide it from their family once they found out.
My friend in HS got pg the first time she ever had sex (at 16yrs old)...gah!! That always blew me away...poor girl. This couple wouldn't be the first honeymoon baby...my mom & best friend both got pg on their honeymoons. I was kind of sad I didn't...lol.
Dude I am due on the 24th and still haven't told our parents. It's early but more power to her. Someone really should have made her read TCOYF though.
exactly - is NFP verboten in this community too? that's the least they could have done. i'm so sad for her.
I'm no expert (someone on here is, pugz maybe?), but my understanding is that they believe it is a sin to attempt to control the number of children in any way. So no natural family planning allowed. You are supposed to be open to as many children as God is willing to send.
Even though she's a midwife, she might really know nothing about conception -- or even ovulation. I mean, she didn't go to nursing school, so whatever training she's had could all be just focused on actual childbirth.
I really hoped Jill was going to be the one to not buy into all that crap. I mean, it seems like you could publicly pay lip service to those ideas, while secretly both just never being in the mood around ovulation.
But then, I guess they'd see that as a sin. The futures of all of those girls make me sad. I think they are brain washed into not questioning any of their parents' beliefs.
they don't subscribe to NFP but after the birth of their kids they have some kind of abstinence period that they found in the old testament, differs if the baby is a boy or a girl. I can't remember the details, it was in their second book though. wambam do you know?
wambam is the actual duggar expert IMO since she hangs out on Free Jinger

Yeah, but they intentionally wean early, like by 6 months, to re-gain their fertility sooner.
