I haven't heard that. Both of my boys burped reasonably well and still spit up all over the place. I hate to think what they would have done if they hadn't burped!
I didn't kill myself burping my babies like some people do, but my babies were pretty easy to burp when they needed it. I'd smile and nod at that advice and do what I wanted.
The NICU nurses taught me to burp with fervor. It's a good hard thump, and it gets the air out so his little tummy could take in more milk and he would be less likely to spit up.
Funny! I am not a big one to burp my babies...maybe in the beginning but never much. Usually the fall asleep on the boob anyway. My kids also don't spit up, even my reflux kid barely did. I felt like I missed some right of passage.
The little boy I used to babysit for would have been unable to finish a 1 oz bottle without being burped. I don't see how you could not burp a baby that need it. He couldn't work it out on his own at all, especially when he was really young.
DD almost never burped and rarely spit up. DS needed to burp every time or the whole feeding was likely to come back up. Both were EBF so I think it depends on the kid.
Huh, I've never heard that. I always attempted to burp them, but would quit after a minute or so if they hadn't. DS1 was EBF and burped like a beast, usually before I even started patting him.
I've always kind of thought burping babies was overrated. But the NICU did teach us to do it. Mostly I complied because it helped them wake up enough to eat.
My baby who spits up a lot spits regardless of whether we burped her or not.

I was told to burp my baby by the nurses, but they also told us if the baby was ebf not to kill yourself trying to get a burp because they're less likely to swallow air. They still suggested we try. He definitely spit up less when we got a good burp right away.

Never heard that, but my two were fine not being burped. I would often forget because when I did do it, they very rarely actually burped. In fact, I haven't burped DS in months...hope I am not being a neglectful parent.

No one ever talked to me about burping this time around. With DD1, I didn't need to burp her hardly at all. DD2 is really gassy so I've (recently) been really diligent about burping her during/after feeding. It seems to be making a difference in how much gas she has to pass later.
I've never heard that. My kids needed to go vertical after feedings. I didn't have to purposely burp them, but they totally needed to burp. I have assumed bottle feeds really necessitated the burping/gas release

With DD (2.5yrs) they told us in the hospital to burp her. I rarely did. She would usually fall asleep on the boob, but she would also just eat and eat and eat until she burped and spat up on her own.
DS get MAAAD sometimes on the boob, and at first I couldn't figure out wtf his deal was, but then realized he NEEDS to be burped. They never mentioned anything about burping in the hospital this time. He also hasn't spat up much at all compared to DD.
