my kid was a wreck at the 15 month visit, so I brought my husband to the 18m and 2 year visit. He was able to keep her happy and distracted while I talked to the doctor. They gave her a sucker at the last one, that helped too
Wait...what all happens that makes it so awful?!?!
My dd always cries during exams and shots of course. This one had two shots. The blood test (for iron and lead) was a finger prick and then it took awhile getting the blood so yeah major screaming.

DS screamed through the 12 month appointment. Our pedi would come within 3 feet of him with the light they use to look in the eyes and ears and he basically climbed me to get away from her. We had to hold him down while he screamed. Thank god DH was there. It was pretty bad.
Depends where you are. Seems like a lot of docs do an iron test, and some do lead. My kids have never had bloodwork done, or freaked at the doctor, so it's not universal.
I have used a show on the tablet in the exam room, though. Doc complimented my genius.
Ds was a mess at his 18 month. The nurse said the majority of kids that age freak out. I used a paci and videos of him on my phone to calm him. I'm hoping two yr is better!

She was at the doctor! Danger danger!
Seriously, she started crying the minute when entered the exam room. It is the friendliest exam room ever. You sit on a bright red couch with a giant horse (which she loves) for 95% of the visit.
Walk into exam room. Wail. Shown stethoscope. Sob hysterically. Pedi tries it on mommy. Must push away and protect mommy! While sobbing. Must be weighed. Scream. They gave me a shot. Scream. Omg they are putting a bandaid on me!!!!! Scream, sob and flail.
@tokenhoser, I am debating declining the iron test. She gets enough from her diet. But then Dr. Google scares me again.
It depends on where you live & the policies of the office.
We never had one as a routine test, but DD needed one for lead to go to Pre School. We ended up going to the county health department because they use a finger prick vs a blood draw.
The doctor was fine at 12 month, but the otoscope, stethoscope, and the shots were miserable. It's day two and we think he's just now okay, but some of that may be teeth.
I'd do the low tech iron check and look at the color of the inner eyelid. Or just give a Flintstone with iron and hedge your bets. I never had to decline though. My office just doesn't do it.
J just screamed and sobbed her way through the entire 15m well check. Not even exaggerating.
It was so bad that the pedi (after asking about her iron intake) actually delayed the blood test. She did get her scheduled shot though.
Apparently we are now ordering a doctor's kit off of amazon... Any recs?
DD started screaming and sobbing her way through appointments really early. Shortly after her 2nd birthday we bought her the Berenstain Bears Go to the Doctor book and read it to her repeatedly. By the time she went in for her 3rd annual check up she did JUST FINE, a little wimpering but not full out sobbing.
