My H and I are going for 5 nights in November. I've been a few times he hasn't. I'm ok with the subway. Any hotel recs? We plan on doing touristy stuff including Rockefeller center, little Italy, etc. would ideally like to spend about $250/night.

It really depends on what location you want. We stayed in the Edison Hotel right by Times Square for $200/night in August and were very happy with the hotel and the location.

Good to know. Maybe more centrally located since we will be going to little Italy and natural history museum.

We stayed at the New Yorker across from Penn Station. I felt like the location was really convienient, and we got 20% off for staying more than three nights.

Little Italy and the AMNH are like 100 blocks away from each other (museum is on the Upper West Side; Little Italy is next to the Lower East Side). Times Square is about as central as you're going to get for them and since there are a lot of subway lines in the Times Square area, you can get to both areas easily from Times Square.
If you don't mind being in a SUPER touristy area, Times Square or Midtown West are probably about as convenient as you can get. Times Square is super hectic, so you'll also have to deal with that if you stay there. But it is conveniently located.
If you want to stay somewhere that isn't quite as touristy, Chelsea is closer to stuff that people who live in New York do.
(Note: Little Italy is kind of terrible so I'd seriously consider taking it off your list. Or at least, I'd maybe walk through quickly if I happened to be near it, but I definitely wouldn't make it a destination and definitely wouldn't plan on eating there.)
I usually stay in Midtown East when I go to NYC since it is super easy to get to most places from there. I really like the W Hotel. Plus it's really close to Ess-a-bagel which is pretty much a must for me everytime I go up to the city.

+1 for the New Yorker! I've stayed there too and got the same deal, because we stayed a week, but I thought that it was from the website I reserved through - new-york.hotelscheap.org/
