I think I'm going with Sherwin Williams paint, based on the boards recommendation. Any other painting supply brands must haves? I've heard purdie? Brushes are the best. Any tips for a first time painter?
I agree with @merida on the 1.5'' brush for cutting in. H and I usually use a similar system when we paint where I cut in and he rolls. If you're painting the ceiling, do that first, then any of the molding (baseboard, door frames, etc), then do the walls. It's the easiest order to go in. Also, I find painter's tape to be more trouble than it's worth - it always ends with a mess for me. I get a much better edge when I just cut in.
I think I use a Purdy 2" angled brush for cutting in. We also have a 1.5" one (SW Contractor Series) and my complaint about it is that it doesn't hold enough paint.
I'm also on Team Steady Hand. I only use tape in really tight spaces where you can't get the brush in there without hitting something you didn't want to hit, like where molding is really close to a corner of the room.

I actually prefer a Wooster brush over the Purdy 2" Cub XL I used to prefer. The cub brushes seem to lose their bristles these days - I don't know if they changed their manufacturing process or something, but I hate picking the bristles out of the paint can.
I think you need to find the brush that works for you- I have about 4 brushes- including a Purdy and a Wooster that I hate. My favorite is a linzer, the "best" one (they literally come- good, better, best) it's not all floopy and smooshy (to be technical) as the other ones, the others' bristles spread out too much for me and make it really hard for me to get a good line
This is seriously one of my most favorite painting supplies ever. The magnet that holds the wet brush? GENIUS. eta: They sell plastic liners (just like roller tray covers) that are worth it as well, so you just throw the mess away.
