Yes. I don't need them going home and telling their parents how messy our house is. Our neighbors were playing on our driveway and the little girl asked me why we have so much junk in our garage. My feelings were hurt! lol
Depends on the kid. Neighbor kids who are here all the time, no.
I once had a playdate though where the kid repeatedly commented on how dusty/dirty my stairs were. I was appropriately shamed, and clean more thoroughly when they are coming over. (also, stop commenting on my dust bunnies, kid. I have other shit to do.)

Uh, hand that kid a swiffer & tell him to STFU!!
Yeah, I love the kid's mom, but she is one of those people who is all "Oh, please ignore my SUPER MESSY house, the cleaners could only stay for 2 hours yesterday" type of people. I'm a poor who has to clean my own house, so it definitely doesn't match up with what the kid is used to. I was completely mortified that he commented on it.
I clean before anyone comes over..it appropriately shames me into actually cleaning.
Yeah, I clean before people come over so I give the impression of someone who does not have very low standards.
My cousin and his wife were in from out of town and dropped by with 10 minutes notice last week. I am pregnant and sick and H had been out of town for 2 days. I might have lied and said that DD had just spilled cereal ALL OVER the living room floor - could you believe it! - when it had really been accumulated over a few days.
I took a week of work this summer for a staycation. Which meant I did jack around the house but we were there all the time. So you can imagine the clutter.
DS has a neighbor boy over (I never clean for neighbor kids they are here all the time) and he asks DS "Why is the house such a mess and your mom is home?"

I got judged by a 7 year old boy. Burn.
My 5-year old nephew told me he couldn't use our bathroom because it was too messy.
Don't stop by unannounced and ask to use the bathroom, jerk!
I have things picked up and make sure the bathroom is clean, but I take advantage of DD having friends over as a way to do the real cleaning. She's distracted and typically just stays in the basement playroom.

I make sure it's clean (clean toilets, kitchen counters, swiffer/vacuum floors), but I don't tidy up all my crap and stage it like it's going on the market or anything, lol.

Yep. Plus, the one friend that lives close enough to visit is always brought by his mom she comes in and chats for 15-20 minutes. And her house is fucking immaculate, lol (yes, I know this shouldn't matter but somehow it does).

lol! When David's friend was over on Wednesday he mistakenly went into my room and was like "Whoa!" lol. Little messy in there at the moment. I'm like, look kid! I've had an insanely busy week, okkkkkay??
I clean before kids are over, period. The cleaner it is when they arrive, the easier it is to clean up after them/ask them to clean up after themselves as they go. It's strategy.

I make the kids pick up the playroom, because if a hurricane is going to hit down there I'd at least like it to start from scratch, rather than building on an already established mess. And I'll do a quick swipe of the powder room to be sure the kids have a clean sink and toilet to use.
Beyond that? Unless the mom is staying, which hasn't happened in a LONG time since my kids are older now, nope. I don't need my house to sparkle for my girls' friends who wouldn't notice anyway (plus I've seen all their houses, so I'm comfortable with the state of my house in comparison on any given day).
